Ajaccio to remain in Ligue 2 following successful appeal

Ajaccio will remain in Ligue 2 after successfully appealing against a decision to relegate them on financial grounds.

The club were demoted last month by French football's financial governing body the DNCG along with Corsican rivals Bastia, who had just been relegated from Ligue 1.

Both clubs had the right to appeal, with Ajaccio confident of success after their accounts were merely ruled "incomplete" ahead of a vote to rubber-stamp funding from local authorities.

Club president Leon Luciani said at the time that "we have every chance of staying in Ligue 2," and was proved right at Tuesday's appeal hearing.

A statement on the club's official website read: "After two weeks of worry, the [DNCG] has announced the club will remain in Ligue 2 after appearing on Tuesday morning before the appeal commission of the French Football Federation."

Bastia's hearing takes place on Wednesday.

They said after the DNCG's initial decision that "the appeal period allows the club to sell players in order to balance their accounts," and they will hope the recent sales of defender Alexander Djiku and midfielder Lassana Coulibaly to Caen and Angers respectively will prove sufficient.
