Morocco hire former Japan boss Halilhodzic as coach

Vahid Halilhodzic signed a four-year contract as the new coach of Morocco but was handed a tough list of targets by his new employers.

The 67-year-old Bosnian replaces Herve Renard, who quit after Morocco were eliminated in the last-16 of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt despite being one of the favourites.

The new coach has been tasked with reaching the semi-finals of the next Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, qualifying Morocco for the World Cup in Qatar the year after, and winning the Cup of Nations...

Africa Cup of Nations: Bennacer dazzles, Ziyech disappoints on transfer stage

While the African Cup of Nations final may have been tough to watch, Steve Nicol says Algeria's defence deserves a lot of credit for their victory.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations ended with Algeria victorious but plenty of players helped or hurt their transfer prospects in the 2019-20 season. ESPN FC's Nick Ames picks out several who boosted or busted their chances of a big summer move.

Players whose value increased

Ismael Bennacer, MF, Empoli/Algeria

The Algerian midfielder was named AFCON's best player and few would seriously disagree. He was not flashy and made none of the headline contributions provided by the likes of Riyad Mahrez...

FIFA bans two African officials for corrupt practices

African football official Musa Hassan Bility has been banned from the game for 10 years by FIFA's ethics committee following an investigation into the finances of the Liberia Football Association (LFA).

FIFA said that Bility was "guilty of having misappropriated FIFA funds as well as having received benefits and found himself in situations of conflict of interest, in violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics."

Bility is a former president of the LFA and a current member of the executive of the Confederation...

Rohr debate misses the point about Nigerian shortcomings

While the African Cup of Nations final may have been tough to watch, Steve Nicol says Algeria's defence deserves a lot of credit for their victory.

For a record eighth time in their history, Nigeria came away from an African Nations Cup campaign brandishing bronze medals around their necks.

It is not just a record for Nigeria, but also for the tournament. No other country has more third-place finishes in the history of the competition.

When in the past this final podium place has been celebrated as a "golden bronze", this time emotions have been more varied. Nations Cup winner Segun Odegbami vehemently refused to celebrate it.

There are those,...

Africa Cup of Nations review: Algeria deserved winners but Egypt leave much to be desired

While the African Cup of Nations final may have been tough to watch, Steve Nicol says Algeria's defence deserves a lot of credit for their victory.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations concluded on Friday night with Algeria defeating Senegal 1-0 to claim their first title since 1990. ESPN FC's Nick Ames, who covered the tournament across Egypt all summer, gives the highs and lows of the competition.

THE GOOD

- It was a fine tournament for bright, up-and-coming coaches and none more so than the victorious Djamel Belmadi. Algeria's tactical mastermind conducted himself with class throughout and showed an admirable number of strings to his bow,...
