Seedorf gets first Cameroon win, Malawi defeated

Clarence Seedorf picked up his first win as Cameroon boss on Friday as the Indomitable Lions defeated Malawi 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who was named as captain following the international retirement of Benjamin Moukandjo, scored the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward outmuscled two Malawian defenders before thumping home a powerful effort from the edge of the box.

While Cameroon have qualified automatically for the 2019 AFCON as hosts, the Indomitable Lions are still taking part in the qualifying campaign in Group B.

The win takes them up to seven points on three matches, four ahead of Morocco who host the Comoros on Casablanca on Saturday.

Seedorf was appointed as the successor to Hugo Broos, who won an unlikely African title with Cameroon in February 2017, began his tenure as head coach with an underwhelming 1-1 draw away in Comoros last month.

The former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder has also courted controversy by announcing that he would not consider players plying their trade in Asian leagues, prompting the premature retirement of Moukandjo.

The 42-year-old coach ultimately relented and recalled Henan Jianye forward Christian Bassogog to the fold for the double-header against Malawi.

The two sides meet again in the reverse fixture in Blantyre on Tuesday.
