Auxerre teammates sent off for fighting against each other

Two Auxerre players face a disciplinary meeting with the French club after being sent off for fighting with each other during a Ligue 2 match.

Pierre-Yves Polomat and Michael Barreto will have to explain why they were throwing punches at each other late on in Auxerre's 4-1 defeat at Quevilly Rouen on Friday.

The pair were separated by one of the home players and a member of the Auxerre delegation, who had raced onto the pitch when the incident flared up nine minutes from time.

"The club feels horrified and ashamed after the inadmissible behaviour of Pierre-Yves Polomat and Michael Barreto on the pitch at Quevilly-Rouen," a club statement read, adding "the pair -- who were sent off by match referee Mehdi Mokhtari -- will appear before Auxerre officials this week."

"The two players have made a mockery of the image of an institution that has made education and its youth academy priorities."

Auxerre, champions of Ligue 1 in 1995-96, were originally founded as a boys' club, developing into one of France's foremost sides in the 1990s with a reputation for producing high-quality young players, such as France internationals Philippe Mexes, Djibril Cisse, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Olivier Kapo among others.
