Friendly trials done, time for Igor Stimac to prove his worth

Following India's 1-1 draw against Syria in the Intercontinental Cup, a tournament in which the hosts ended bottom, with one point from three games, coach Igor Stimac took a not-so-subtle dig at India's previous management.

"I was not brought here to give just few wins and losses and be nowhere. It is easy to play against certain teams below the range [lower ranked opponents] and get the win. I am not here for that."

Under their previous coach Stephen Constantine, India had done remarkably well...

India opened their 2019 Intercontinental Cup campaign with a 4-2 loss to Tajikistan. Despite a 2-0 lead going into the second half, India, the heavily fancied hosts, were stunned by a 20-minute salvo that saw Tajikistan score four unanswered goals and snatch the win.

India had opened the scoring with Sunil Chhetri's panenka in the fourth minute and he doubled it in the 41st with a lovely toe-poked finish. In between those goals, though, Tajikistan dominated for large swathes with...

Drama at death as Chennaiyin miss out on AFC knockouts

Chennaiyin FC went into Wednesday's AFC Cup fixture away to Nepal's Manang Marshyangdi in Lalitpur knowing that their fate wasn't in their hands. With eight points, they trailed Bangladesh club Dhaka Abahani by two points. With Abahani playing against Minerva in Guwahati at the same time, Chennaiyin needed a win to top the group and hope for a draw or a Minerva win in the other game to progress to the inter-zonal semi-finals. Not since 2012, when East Bengal and Salgaocar finished bottom of their...
