Enugu Rangers relegation would be a nightmare story for Nigerian football

If Rangers go down, this could be the start of a descent into oblivion. And the club will not be the only losers.

Gradually, but with a sense of near inevitability, Enugu Rangers are inexorably drawing closer and closer to the once unthinkable: relegation.

Led by the likes of Christian Chukwu and Emmanuel Okala, the Flying Antelopes, carrying the hopes of the people of southeast Nigeria fresh off the civil war, pulverised almost anything in their path from the 1970s to '80s (okay, all but Shooting Stars, who ran them all the way) as they cantered to six league titles.

The last of those championships was won...

Is Gernot Rohr right to ignore the Nigeria Professional Football League?

Gernot Rohr's latest Super Eagles squad has been the topic of fierce debate in Nigeria.

Conversation has raged non-stop since Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr's decision to call up just one player from the Nigeria Professional Football League in the last international break.

Instead, the German chose to take the opportunity of the last FIFA window to look at a few Europe-groomed players.

That decision has opened both the coach and his assistants to criticism, with many questioning his rationale for ignoring the homegrown lads, especially at time of marked improvement in the administration...

Tempers flare on Match Day 18 of Nigeria Premier League action

Enugu Rangers have fallen flat in their championship defence, causing Imama Amapakabo to be sacked.

This is one weekend that Nigeria league organisers will want to forget. After 17 match days of near hitch-free football, things took a turn for the worse this weekend.

Crowd trouble at two venues led to all manner of negative headlines that overshadowed one very significant road win.

But by far the biggest headline of the weekend was from a team who didn't play domestic football this weekend. Defending champion Enugu Rangers sacked coach Imama Amapakabo, sparking comparisons with Leicester City's...

Alhassan grabs hat trick for Akwa while Nasarawa run riot in NPFL

Akwa United ran out 4-2 victors over Shooting Stars SC.

It was a weekend of cheers and jeers in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) action.

Akwa United and Nasarawa United both scored four goals apiece, Akwa's Alhassan Ibrahim helping himself to a hat trick in the process.

On the flip side, the biggest game of the weekend was played to near-empty stands despite the rivalry and size of the two clubs involved.

Here are five takeaways from the weekend's action:

Plateau United reassert themselves atop the Nigeria Premier League table

Stephen Odey, in purple, was joined by Plateau United's Reuben Bala in the Nigeria Premier League's hat trick club.

After just one matchday of staring up at MFM FC, Plateau United returned to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table in emphatic style this week, handing ABS FC their heaviest defeat in a 4-1 thrashing.

MFM, who had dislodged Plateau from top spot following a 2-1 home victory over the then-league leaders, put up a horrendously poor performance as they went down 1-0 to Gombe United. The only surprise in that game was that MFM only lost by a single goal.

Nigeria youngsters prove their worth in draw with Senegal as Rohr snubs Musa

Gernot Rohr did not give Ahmed Musa the captain's armband for Nigeria's tight 1-1 draw with Senegal on Thursday.

On Thursday night, Nigeria's Super Eagles played out a 1-1 draw with Senegal's Teranga Lions in London. Gernot Rohr's team were without three of their most experienced members -- captain John Obi Mikel and strikers Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye -- but they still contrived to show heart and pull off what was a more than commendable result against arguably Africa's best team.

Here are four takeaways from the game.
