Game on! Match to go ahead despite Storm Ophelia wreaking havoc

Cork City's Turners Cross Stadium suffered severe damage due to Storm Ophelia
Cork City need just one point from the match against Derry to win the Irish title.

Amid all the damage and debris, Cork City felt the full brunt of Storm Ophelia as high winds swept across the Republic of Ireland on Monday.

Thankfully, nobody was injured as Cork's stadium was ravaged by the storm overnight, causing the Derrynane Stand to collapse.

Naturally, this left Cork's Irish Premier League tie against Derry City, scheduled to kick off at 7:20 p.m. on Tuesday night, hanging in the balance.

However, despite the stadium roof lying crumpled atop the terraces, the club confirmed that against all the odds the match will still take place as planned.

Sure enough, after consulting with engineers and relevant authorities, Cork wasted no time confirming that the Derry game will indeed go ahead on Tuesday night with the Derrynane Stand closed and cordoned off.

The show must go on, as the old adage goes.

Chris covers the funny side of the game for ESPN FC in the Toe Poke blog.
