Singapore thrashed by Albirex Niigata for second loss on Japan tour

Singapore's squad in Japan was missing many of their most experienced players.

With the start of the AFF Suzuki Cup less than four months away, Singapore were given another wake up call after being thrashed 3-0 by Japanese side Albirex Niigata in a friendly match at the Denka Big Swan Stadium in Niigata City on Sunday.

After conceding three times in the first quarter of an hour, the Lions showed greater defensive steel in the second half to be spared from a heavier defeat.

Tampines' Hafiz Sujad strives for Ryan Giggs' consistency for Singapore

Known as one of Singapore football's most consistent and versatile footballers, Tampines Rovers midfielder Hafiz Sujad is aiming to emulate the consistency of Manchester United and Wales legend, Ryan Giggs.

Hafiq plied his trade in central midfield as Young Lions captain from 2009 to 2012, but his tenacity to succeed anywhere on the pitch caught the eye of then-LionsXII boss V. Sundramoorthy, who converted him into a flying left-back.

It proved to be successful as LionsXII went on to claim the 2013...

Singapore coach V. Sundramoorthy
Coach Sundram oversaw an improved performance from Singapore on their Japan tour.

The Singapore national team bounced back from Wednesday's shock loss to record the first win of their Japan training tour on Thursday.

Singapore say performances count more than results on Japan tour

The Lions suffered a surprise 3-2 loss to Niigata University of Health and Welfare on Wednesday. They will play Japan Sports College on Thursday ahead of their friendly against J-League outfit Albirex Niigata on Sunday.

"I'm happy to give the players their first playing minutes of this training camp," Sundram...

Geylang's Faritz wants more assists for Sundram's Singapore

Geylang International defender Faritz Hameed is determined to book his place in Singapore's AFF Suzuki Cup squad by providing more assists for club and country.

Faritz, 26, had to endure a difficult 2015 when a long-term injury curtailed his final season with Fandi Ahmad's LionsXII in the Malaysia Super League. But he's since struck form as a member of the new-look Geylang International outfit in the S.League.

Faritz was once regarded as Singapore's top right-back, with a style similar to the legendary...
