Nainggolan, Strootman lead Roma to gritty win at Udinese

Radja Nainggolan's first-half goal was all Roma needed to beat Udinese and pull closer to Juventus at the top of table.

Roma closed the gap between them and Serie A leaders Juventus to just one point after their gritty 1-0 win at Udinese was followed up by a dramatic 2-1 win for Fiorentina over the Old Lady, but regardless of the result of that intense encounter the Giallorossi can be happy with their side's new-found ability to grind out results when not at their best.

The narrow victory at the Stadio Friuli was the second such win for Roma in as many weeks, and apart from one scrabbled first-half double save...

Federico Fazio is suddenly a lynchpin at the heart of Roma's defence

Luciano Spalletti says the one transfer he wants is for the Roma fans to be allowed to return to support their club.

Roma's summer transfer business didn't exactly set the world alight. The club moved to reinforce their notoriously flaky defence preseason, but with new left-back Mario Rui struck down with a cruciate ligament injury almost straight after arriving and Bruno Peres more use going towards the opposition goal than defending his own, it's been left to loan signings Thomas Vermaelen, Juan Jesus and Federico Fazio to plug the gaps.

All three were brought in as back-up for the established centre-back pairing...

Szczesny, Fazio help Roma hold onto gritty win at Genoa

Roma celeb v Genoa 20170108
In a tough environment and facing poor conditions, Roma showed a new-found toughness and resolve versus Genoa.

Roma started 2017 by taking three points from one of Serie A's toughest grounds on Sunday afternoon, with a gritty win in icy temperatures and on a bumpy pitch at Genoa. This win showed that the notoriously flaky Giallorossi can mix it up away from home and also gives supporters hope that they can take their blistering home form on the road.

A clumsy own goal from Armando Izzo nine minutes before the break gave Roma a deserved half-time lead that they had to dig deep to defend, but a makeshift...

Spalletti and Roma must look to improve away form in Serie A

Daniele De Rossi, Radja Nainggolan & Kevin Strootman
Roma return to Serie A four points behind leaders Juventus after the festive break.

Luciano Spalletti can look back at his work with AS Roma in 2016 and see a job well done.

The manager's Giallorossi collected a whopping 86 Serie A points in the calendar year, and while that's not been enough to close the gap on all-conquering Juventus, it's the fourth highest of any team in Europe's top leagues -- behind only the Bianconeri, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Despite this, Roma have one New Year's resolution as the Italy's traditional Befana celebrations pass, people throw away the...

Serie A burning questions: Allegri's Juve future, Atalanta's magic, more

Paul Mariner says Patrice Evra can still play at a high level in other leagues, but should stick it out with Juventus.

As Serie A prepares to resume on Jan. 7 following a brief winter break, James Horncastle assesses the big questions for the second half of the season.

What does the future hold for Max Allegri?

Max Allegri's recently expressed opinion that you only evolve as a manager by changing scenery and trying new experiences, his angry reaction to defeat in the Italian Super Cup ("I ought to kick them up the backside") and an acute awareness that if you stay anywhere too long you run the risk of going...

Echoes of Sebastian Abreu as Juan Manuel Iturbe makes his 10th move

Two late goals from Juventus sealed their come-from-behind victory over Torino.
ESPN FC's Gab Marcotti explains why Joe Hart won't move to Liverpool in January, and why he is skeptical of a future move.
Juan Manuel Iturbe
Torino is the eighth club that Juan Manuel Iturbe has played for in his short career.

Last week veteran Uruguayan centre-forward Sebastian Abreu was proudly presented at his latest club -- Bangu, a small but traditional outfit on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

The move to Brazil is the 28th of his career, which has taken him to a total of 23 clubs in nine countries. At the age of 40, this will surely be one of his last moves.

But even as Abreu trades El Salvador for Brazil, a player is emerging in Italy who could end up challenging Abreu's statistics. Paraguayan striker Juan Manuel...
