Diego Simeone needs to turn Atletico Madrid's attack loose

The ESPN FC panel discuss Atletico Madrid's slow start to the season and whether it's already too late for any title hopes.

Few things in football are a given. But if you have a wonderfully mean defensive unit and midfielders full of enterprise who are tough in the tackle and you set them up with the sole purpose of not losing a game the chances are you will succeed in that objective. This, however, does not by any stretch of the imagination mean you stand a greater chance of winning it.

Diego Simeone, the man at the heart of Atletico Madrid's glorious past few years, is now finding that out to his detriment.

What has...

Chelsea's Diego Costa was interested in return to Atletico Madrid

Antonio Conte stresses how important Diego Costa is to Chelsea's success this season.
Craig Burley says Diego Costa's lack of discipline is no good for anybody and he won't get away with it any longer.
Julen Lopetegui wastes no time, as he has omitted both Iker Casillas and Cesc Fabregas from the Spain squad.

Diego Costa has admitted that after a difficult year at Chelsea last season, he considered returning to Atletico Madrid.

The 27-year-old, a £32 million signing from Atletico Madrid two years ago, was reportedly unhappy at Chelsea at the end of last season and there were doubts as to how the temperamental Brazil-born player would fare under Antonio Conte.

But the forward has enjoyed a strong start to the 2016-17 campaign, scoring two goals in two league starts for Chelsea. He has...

Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez criticises Antoine Griezmann comments

The ESPN FC panel discuss Atletico Madrid's slow start to the season and whether it's already too late for any title hopes.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has scolded Antoine Griezmann for his negative comments after their goalless draw at Leganes on Saturday.

Griezmann spoke out in frustration after a second consecutive draw against a promoted outfit this season, saying: "If we continue like this we are only going to fight to avoid the drop."

But Saul, who helped Atletico finish third last season in Spain's top flight, expressed his disappointment at his teammate's choice of words.

"Griezmann has to think about...

Europe's Deadline Day: Real Madrid, Juventus and others still active

ESPN FC's Sid Lowe explains why Barcelona are interested in Paco Alcacer.

With deadline day approaching, ESPN FC's European correspondents assess their side's business so far and suggest what else needs to be done.

BARCELONA: It's been a busy summer for Barcelona with six players signed so far and 13 shipped out in various forms. The defence has been strengthened in the form of centre-back Samuel Umtiti and left-back Lucas Digne, while midfielders Denis Suarez and Andre Gomes have joined the club, too. Claudio Bravo's request to move to Manchester City means goalkeeper...

Diego Simeone key to Antoine Griezmann staying with Atletico

Diego Simeone insists his striker Antoine Griezmann is one of the best in the world.
Diego Simeone believes Antoine Griezmann deserved to be named UEFA's Best Player in Europe ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Anotine Griezmann have been named as nominees for this prestigious award, but who will take the plaudits?
ESPN FC's Sid Lowe says that Antoine Griezmann probably won't leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

Antoine Griezmann sought assurances that manager Diego Simeone would be staying at Atletico Madrid before signing a new contract with the club.

Griezmann, 25, extended his contract with Atletico by one year in June and the attacker, who scored 32 goals in all competitions last season, is now tied to the Spanish club until 2021.

Paris Saint-Germain were one of several teams, with Arsenal reportedly another, who tried to lure Griezmann away from Atleti but the France international said that Simeone...
