Cardiff created club history as a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United kept them top of the Sky Bet Championship.

The Bluebirds had never started a campaign with three league wins in their 118-year history.

But that odd statistic was consigned to history as Sean Morrison and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing put the gloss on a performance that suggests Cardiff are credible promotion contenders this season.

United were game opponents after beating Brentford and losing in controversial circumstances at Middlesbrough...

Aston Villa's difficult to start to the new Championship season continued as they were thrashed 3-0 by Cardiff.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored in either half and Junior Hoilett also found the net for Neil Warnock's Bluebirds as the home side boasted the cutting edge that Villa lacked.

Steve Bruce's visitors were limited in attack and after being held at home by Hull on the opening weekend, this was another reminder for Villa that they will not have things all their own way this season.

Cardiff, watched...

Cardiff reached round two of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 extra-time victory over 2008 FA Cup final opponents Portsmouth.

Pompey had won the last cup meeting between the two sides on the biggest stage of all and looked as if they might repeat that triumph when Bluebirds captain Sean Morrison scored a 32nd-minute own goal.

But substitute Nathaniel Mendez-Laing equalised before Greg Halford's 113th-minute strike prevented a penalty shoot-out.

Cardiff started brightly with Matthew Kennedy probing down the...

Danish striker Kenneth Zohore grabbed a late winner at Burton to give Cardiff the perfect start to the new campaign.

The big striker worked room for a shot on the edge of the box and on his left foot unerringly found the bottom corner of the net with a thunderous shot with just three minutes remaining.

Experienced manager Neil Warnock, who managed Burton early in his career, had only lost once in his 10 previous opening-day encounters and in truth they never really looked in danger of losing this...

Danny Ward was sent off as Huddersfield lost 3-0 against Cardiff to go into the play-offs on the back of successive defeats.

Wales goalkeeper Ward, on loan from Liverpool, saw red for handball outside the box in the first half and faces a ban.

By that point, Kenneth Zohore had already struck for Cardiff, and with the extra man he set up two more for Joe Bennett.

Town, with their play-off place secured, fielded a strong side but were never in the game.

The defeat leaves them fifth in the table, setting...
