Bruno Henrique, Dudu lead Palmeiras to 2-0 victory over Colo Colo

There was an obvious fear hanging over the last of the quarterfinal first-leg ties in South America's Copa Libertadores.

Colo Colo of Chile had home advantage. But they looked outgunned against Palmeiras of Brazil, who had won all of their previous away games in the competition. The Chileans would almost certainly make a cautious start, trying to make sure they did not concede an away goal, and hoping their impish playmaker Jorge Valdivia could come up with a piece of magic to break the deadlock.

Colo Colo, Atletico Tucuman looking to cause upsets in Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

The quarterfinals kick off this week in the Copa Libertadores, South America's Champions League.

The eight teams left standing in the competition contain seven former winners -- and two outsiders. And if that comes across as a mathematical impossibility, it is easily explained.

Jorge Valdivia, Lucas Barrios typify Colo Colo grit in Copa Libertadores

The last eight of this year's Copa Libertadores will not consist of teams only from Brazil and Argentina. Colo Colo of Chile have made it into the quarterfinals, drawing 2-2 on aggregate with Corinthians of Brazil, and going through on the away goals rule.

Colo Colo are Chile's last hope; CONMEBOL must be firm on ineligible players

Fans of Santiago giants Colo Colo have a chant. "Colo Colo is Chile," they sing.

This week, as the quarterfinal places in the Copa Libertadores are sealed, Colo Colo could end up representing more than just Chile -- they could be the only club in the last eight that does not come from Argentina or Brazil.

In last year's re-organisation of the Libertadores, more places were given to teams from the continent's big two. This has clearly filtered its way through to the knockout stages. In this season's...

Atlanta United send Carlos Carmona to Colo Colo in Chile

Atlanta United has transferred midfielder Carlos Carmona to Chilean side Colo Colo, the MLS club revealed on Thursday, telling the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the deal was done with a "heavy heart."

Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra told the AJC that the Five Stripes were reluctant to sell the player, but that the deal was made so that Carmona could be with his wife, who is experiencing complications due to her pregnancy, and is unable to travel.

"We wouldn't be doing the...
