Espanyol's Mario Hermoso scores forgettable 'hat trick' against Leganes

Espanyol players celebrate after scoring a goal in a 3-2 loss to Leganes.
Mario Hermoso, far right, finally had a goal to celebrate at the end of Espanyol's loss to Leganes.

MADRID -- Espanyol defender Mario Hermoso had no reason to celebrate his unusual "hat trick" on Sunday.

Hermoso scored three times in a 3-2 loss at Leganes in the Spanish league, but only one goal counted for his team.

The 22-year-old Hermoso was responsible for two own-goals at Butarque Stadium, the first while trying to intercept a low cross inside the area in the 11th minute, giving hosts Leganes a 1-0 lead.

He found his own net again while trying to clear a cross in the 82nd minute giving Leganes...

Aaron Martin -- Espanyol

After making his debut in October 2016, Martin has earned a regular starting spot at Espanyol and attracted admirers across Europe with his impressive performances. The left-back has won three caps for Spain Under-21s but was overlooked for the European Championship squad in the summer.

Bale scores in return as Real Madrid ease past Espanyol

MADRID -- Three quick thoughts from Real Madrid's  2-0 win in La Liga over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu.

1. Much-changed Real stay in control of title race

La Liga leaders Real Madrid maintained their control of the title race as Alvaro Morata and Gareth Bale got the goals in Saturday afternoon's straightforward 2-0 win over Espanyol at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Backup centre-forward Morata headed...

Diego Reyes, Diego Lopez key to Espanyol's stingy defence vs Barcelona

Since Diego Reyes entered the starting XI in October, Espanyol have only conceded four goals in 10 matches.

Diego Reyes emerges slightly late from the dressing room at Espanyol's Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque -- he can be forgiven, he was watching the final minutes of his former side Club America's FIFA Club World Cup semifinal defeat to Real Madrid -- but being late is not something he's made a habit of this season.

Since making his first start for his new club at the beginning of October, he's committed just six fouls and he's yet to pick up a booking. What's more impressive is that since Reyes came...

Diego Reyes slowly playing himself into Mexico contention

Diego Reyes scored the winner in Espanyol's away win at Real Betis.

Is Diego Reyes being given enough credit?

The Espanyol defender has now started in four La Liga matches in a row and become an important player for the mid-table Spanish club. On Sunday, Reyes highlighted this significance to his squad with a game-winning goal in the 1-0 away victory over Real Betis.

Although many will point out the own-goal that he scored in the previous match against Eibar, there is something to be said for the 24-year-old who was able to immediately bounce back in the following...

Diego Llorente and Marco Asensio fates a priority for Real Madrid

Marco Asensio, No. 25, spent last season on loan at Espanyol, and the Barcelona-based club might like to keep him.

When Zinedine Zidane returns from his holiday in India, one of the items at the top of his to-do list will be trimming his squad ahead of the 2016-17 season. There are unlikely to be any arrivals while the European Championship is in full flow, allowing Zidane and his staff a bit of time to identify positions that need strengthening and to assess the first-team prospects of the players officially returning to the fold on June 30 after loan spells.

Denis Cheryshev has already gone, signing a five-year...
