Basel boss Urs Fischer encouraged by results against English sides

Arsene Wenger hopes Arsenal can carry the momentum of beating Chelsea over the weekend to UCL play against Basel.

Basel coach Urs Fischer will take heart from his side's recent run against English clubs when they take on Arsenal on Wednesday, but insists those results count for nothing against the Gunners.

Basel take on Arsenal in the second round of fixtures in Group A of the Champions League after both teams drew their opening games 1-1.

The Swiss Super League champions have lost just one of their last four games in England, having drawn at Manchester United in 2012 before winning at Tottenham and Chelsea

FC Basel embody the Champions League's struggles for smaller clubs

FC Basel are massive underdogs in Europe because it's hard to completely change the style that works back home.

On paper, Arsenal should be set for an extremely tough challenge in the Champions League this week. Their opponents, FC Basel, aren't merely seven-time champions of the Swiss Super League; they also boast a 100 percent record in this season's top-flight with nine victories from nine matches. Their 27 points are nearly double the number of their closest challengers, Young Boys. It's a staggering level of dominance.

Yet assess the odds for Wednesday's game at the Emirates and the implied probability...

ESPN FC's Craig Burley says Arsenal completely controlled proceedings against a somewhat lacklustre Chelsea side.

Granit Xhaka needs to be patient as he settles in at Arsenal but will develop into a better player under Arsene Wenger, his brother Taulant has said.

The Xhaka brothers will go head-to-head for a second time in a few months on Wednesday when Arsenal take on Taulant's Basel in the Champions League at the Emirates, having also faced each other when Switzerland played Albania at Euro 2016 in June.

"He needs to be patient but he knows this and I am sure he can progress there," Taulant told the

Basel fought back to secure a 1-1 draw in their Champions League Group A opener against Ludogorets at St Jakob-Park.

Jonathan Cafu fired the Bulgarians ahead on the stroke of half-time.

However, Basel, who had won eight games from eight so far this season and are already nine points clear of nearest rivals Young Boys in the Swiss top flight, produced a strong second-half showing and were rewarded with 10 minutes left when Renato Steffen hooked the ball in at the far post.

With these two sides expected...

Iwobi, Umtiti and Morata among 32 Champions League players to watch

ESPN FC's Alexis Nunes examines some interesting and notable Champions League facts as kick off of the group stage approaches.

With the 2016-17 Champions League group stage getting under way this week, Michael Yokhin picks out a player to watch from each of the 32 clubs taking part.

Group A

Presnel Kimpembe, PSG
Kimpembe is a rarity at Paris Saint-Germain -- an academy graduate who is getting a fair chance to prove himself in the lineup. The 21-year-old, who was linked to Chelsea, featured regularly in the beginning of the season, and coach Unai Emery was satisfied with his performances. With David Luiz back at Chelsea,...
