Ohio cities Cincinnati, Columbus on opposite paths of MLS's future

Columbus fans voice their dissatisfaction with the proposed relocation of the club and discuss the #SaveTheCrew movement.

Political and business leaders in Cincinnati are pushing toward their goal of scoring a Major League Soccer franchise, while in Ohio's capital city, soccer supporters are on defense.

In a few years, Ohio could have two MLS teams. Or still just one.

Or nil.

The 22-year-old league's growth plan got shaken when the owner of the Columbus Crew, one of its 10 original teams, announced in October he could seek to move the team to Austin, Texas, if Columbus can't come up with a new stadium in a downtown...

MLS names four cities as finalists for two expansion teams

MLS says Cincinnati, Detroit, Nashville, and Sacramento are the four finalists for two expansion team slots to be announced in December.

The four contenders will make presentations to the league's expansion committee in New York City on Dec. 6. The results of that meeting will then be discussed by the MLS Board of Governors on Dec. 14, with a final decision made by the end of the year. Two more cities will be named at a later date.

"The leaders of the Cincinnati, Detroit, Nashville and Sacramento...

Harrison Delbridge signs with Melbourne City, eyes Australia call-up

Melbourne City assistant coach Michael Valkanis has left the club.

New Melbourne City recruit Harrison Delbridge has returned to Australia carrying the bold ambition of earning Socceroos selection before next year's World Cup.

After moving to the United States at the age of 10, the Sydney-born 25-year-old has played his entire career in America -- most recently impressing over two seasons at second-tier FC Cincinnati.

Bolstering City's defence for an A-League title push isn't the only thing driving the tall defender.

"I came back to Australia to hopefully try to...

Mayor helps Cincinnati's plan for new MLS stadium after county says no

With several cities clamoring for an MLS franchise, Taylor Twellman looks at Cincinnati and other markets' credentials.

FC Cincinnati's quest to build a new soccer stadium gained hope under a new proposal from Mayor John Cranley on Friday after county commissioners nearly derailed a plan earlier this week.

Cinicinnati is one of 12 locations vying for one of four MLS expansion slots, and the race is on to confirm a stadium plan quickly, with the first two teams set to be announced next month.

Sacramento and Nashville already have stadium plans, and Cincinnati appeared on the verge of joining them as the...

FC Cincinnati secures shirt sponsorship contingent on joining MLS

With several cities clamoring for an MLS franchise, Taylor Twellman looks at Cincinnati and other markets' credentials.

FC Cincinnati's bid to secure one of the two MLS expansion slots in December received a boost on Monday, when the club announced a jersey sponsorship deal with Mercy Health.

The deal is contingent on Cincinnati being selected to join MLS next month.

While terms of the agreement were not disclosed, FCC stated that it is "on par" with Atlanta United's deal with American Family Insurance. Sources later confirmed to ESPN FC a Sports Business Daily report that the deal is worth around $5 million a year...
