Ex-Real Madrid's Michel Salgado sees Gibraltar United potential

Michel Salgado is part of the group that has taken over at Gibraltar United.

Former Real Madrid and Blackburn Rovers defender Michel Salgado is looking forward to an "adventure" in his new role as part-owner of Gibraltar United.

Salgado, a former Spain international, and his Swiss-Italian business partner Pablo Dana have taken over the team, who are seventh in the 10-team Gibraltar Premier League.

The news was accompanied by the announcement of Switzerland's Turicum Bank as the club's main sponsor, while reports in the local media said the takeover deal could involve funding...

Netherlands in danger after loss as Ronaldo lifts Portugal, France win

Netherlands are in danger of failing to qualify for a second straight major tournament after losing 2-0 to Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

After finishing third at the 2014 World Cup, the Dutch missed out on Euro 2016 and now find themselves in fourth place midway through their campaign to reach Russia, six points off the lead in Group A and three back of a potential playoff spot.

Danny Blind handed a first cap to 17-year-old Matthijs de Ligt, but the centre-back misplayed a...

Cyprus were given a scare on the way to their 3-1 victory over 10-man Gibraltar in their clash at Nicosia.

The hosts took a deserved lead into the break after centre back Konstantinos Laifis was quickest to react to Demetris Christofi's deflected free kick and poked the ball past Gibraltar goalkeeper Deren Ibrahim.

The visitors replied six minutes after the restart when Lee Casciaro headed in Ryan Casciaro's cross as they searched for their first-ever competitive point in major tournament qualification.

Christian Benteke scored the quickest ever goal in World Cup qualifying to help Belgium to a comfortable 6-0 victory away at Gibraltar.

It was a disastrous start for the hosts after Benteke stole possession of the ball straight from kick-off before sprinting away and scoring within seven seconds of the match.

Belgium doubled their advantage through Axel Witsel's deflected long-range effort before Benteke added his second just before half-time.

Dries Mertens got on the scoresheet six minutes after...

Four second-half goals against Group H's bottom side Gibraltar saw Estonia get off the mark in World Cup qualifying.

Gibraltar began to tire after the break and Mattias Kait took advantage by getting on the end of Konstantin Vassiljev's cross on 47 minutes.

Vassiljev doubled Estonia's lead just five minutes later with a low shot beyond Gibraltar goalkeeper Jordan Perez and Kait got his second goal of the evening on 70 minutes after he got on the end of Dmitri Kruglov's corner.
