Gremio and Barcelona S.C. advance to Copa Libertadores semifinals

Minutes after scoring the goal that would send Barcelona of Guayaquil into the semifinals, Jonathan Alvez saw red.

The first two semifinal places in South America's Copa Libertadores were filled on Wednesday in a night of great tension. A total of three red cards and two goals tell their own story.

Both games were all square from last week's first-leg ties. In Rio de Janeiro, Botafogo and Gremio had drawn 0-0 in an all-Brazilian clash, while fellow Brazilian club Santos had come back from Ecuador with a 1-1 draw against Barcelona of Guayaquil.

That away goal appeared to put Santos in the driving seat. Seeking...

South America's Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, picks up pace

Bolivian side Wilstermann weren't expected to get to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals and hope to continue their journey by defeating River Plate.

Some three and a half months have passed since the group phase came to an end and the Copa Libertadores field was whittled down to 16 teams. Since then there has only been one more round.

Eight teams remain. By next Thursday there will only be four, and come the end of November the continent will have its champion, just in time to go to the Arab Emirates and take part in the Club World Cup.

By pure coincidence, there is a delightful symmetry about the quarterfinals. Argentina and Brazil each provide...

Floodlights, new River players make for Copa Libertadores knockout drama

Ignacio Scocco scored the first of River Plate's goals as they took a big step toward the quarterfinals.

It is a new Copa Libertadores with a fresh calendar -- and some of the same old problems. The match between Guarani of Paraguay and Argentina's River Plate suffered an 11-minute hold up because of an old fashioned floodlight failure -- not an uncommon event at Asuncion's Defensores del Chaco Stadium.

This was always a game likely to generate more heat than light, though, for two reasons.

One was the fact that two River Plate players tested positive in post-match drug tests towards the end of the...

Gremio keen to re-sign Liverpool's Lucas Leiva - president

Mohamed Salah says he wants to win trophies after completing his move from Roma to Liverpool.
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol weighs in on Liverpool's notable fixtures following the release of the 2017-18 season schedule.

Gremio president Odorico Roman has told Zero Hora that they are keen to re-sign Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.

Lucas, who is currently Liverpool's longest-serving player, moved to Anfield from Gremio in 2007 and has widely been linked with a return to his homeland, Brazil.

The 30-year-old has one year remaining on his current Liverpool deal and faces an uncertain future, with Jurgen Klopp admitting at the end of last season that he had "no idea" whether he had played his last game for the Reds.

"Lucas...

Eight slots up for grabs before Copa Libertadores enters knockout play

Jonathan Gomez and Santa Fe must defeat The Strongest to advance in the Copa Libertadores.

Half of the places have been filled in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores. This final week of the group phase, then, is all about filling the other half.

Eight slots remain, and 14 teams are chasing them. In some cases, it is a straight shootout. In Group 5, for example, either Colombia's Santa Fe or The Strongest of Bolivia will join Santos of Brazil in the knockout phase. The two teams meet in Bogota on Tuesday. Santa Fe need to win. A draw is good enough for The Strongest. But the Bolivians...
