Gremio deny Barcelona's comeback dreams, advance to Libertadores final

Gremio of Brazil lost its perfect record at home in the competition but gained a place in the Copa final.

Tuesday night produced one of the great comebacks in the history of South America's Copa Libertadores. In an all-Argentine semifinal, Lanus found themselves needing four goals in 46 minutes to overcome River Plate -- and they managed all four, reaching their first final in magnificent style.

Could Wednesday's semifinal match it for drama? The task ahead of Barcelona of Ecuador was, if anything, even more daunting than that which had faced Lanus. Barcelona had lost the first leg 3-0 at home to Gremio...

Barcelona's magical Copa Libertadores run hits snag in 3-0 defeat to Gremio

River Plate beat Lanus 1-0 in the first-leg of their all-Argentine Copa Libertadores semifinal.
Barcelona fell behind early Wednesday and now face a three-goal deficit going into the second leg.

The smart money in this new, year-long version of the Copa Libertadores was always on a final between clubs from Brazil and Argentina -- especially when, purely by coincidence, the draw for the knockout stages put almost all the teams from South America's two traditional powers in separate halves of the draw.

One half has gone as planned -- two Buenos Aires clubs are meeting in the semifinal, with River Plate ahead of Lanus 1-0 after the first leg.

But Barcelona of Ecuador had clearly not read the...

River Plate, Barcelona host Copa Libertadores semis starting Tuesday

Striker Ignacio Scocco and River Plate host Lanus in an all-Argentine clash on Tuesday night.

Now that the drama of this month's FIFA dates is done and digested, the focus in South America switches to club football.

The Copa Libertadores, the continent's Champions League, has reached the semifinal stage.

Four teams from three different countries are left to fight for the trophy in what is a special year for the Libertadores.

Previously, the action was crammed into the first half of the year, with occasional brief extensions to allow for World Cups.

This year, though, the Libertadores...

Gremio and Barcelona S.C. advance to Copa Libertadores semifinals

Minutes after scoring the goal that would send Barcelona of Guayaquil into the semifinals, Jonathan Alvez saw red.

The first two semifinal places in South America's Copa Libertadores were filled on Wednesday in a night of great tension. A total of three red cards and two goals tell their own story.

Both games were all square from last week's first-leg ties. In Rio de Janeiro, Botafogo and Gremio had drawn 0-0 in an all-Brazilian clash, while fellow Brazilian club Santos had come back from Ecuador with a 1-1 draw against Barcelona of Guayaquil.

That away goal appeared to put Santos in the driving seat. Seeking...

South America's Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, picks up pace

Bolivian side Wilstermann weren't expected to get to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals and hope to continue their journey by defeating River Plate.

Some three and a half months have passed since the group phase came to an end and the Copa Libertadores field was whittled down to 16 teams. Since then there has only been one more round.

Eight teams remain. By next Thursday there will only be four, and come the end of November the continent will have its champion, just in time to go to the Arab Emirates and take part in the Club World Cup.

By pure coincidence, there is a delightful symmetry about the quarterfinals. Argentina and Brazil each provide...
