LionsXII weren't perfect, but they brought Singapore fans together

It is two years since the end of LionsXII when they were unexpectedly kicked out of Malaysian competitions.

Their demise was due to financial and political reasons, rather than anything to do with football.

The return of Singapore's best players to the S.League was supposed to boost local football. Instead, it is in a worse state today than it was in 2015.

Here are five reasons why disbanding LionsXII was a mistake.

1. They brought Singapore fans together

Shahdan Sulaiman seeks AFF Suzuki Cup redemption with Singapore

It has been a difficult two years since breaking his leg at the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup, but Shahdan Sulaiman says he is ready to be part of the Singapore squad for the upcoming edition.

Shahdan, 28, was injured in the Lions' 4-2 victory over Myanmar in their second Group B game at the National Stadium in November 2014.

Defending champions from their 2012 success under Radojko Avramovic, Singapore subsequently bowed out of the tournament at the group stage after losing to Malaysia.

Hougang won't want Albirex to win S.League title against us - Raihan

Midfielder Raihan Rahman is determined to keep the S.League trophy far away from Albirex Niigata's sights when his Hougang United team face them at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday.

Albirex, who are gunning for an unprecedented quadruple -- they won the League Cup and Charity Shield earlier this year -- and will be crowned league champions if they manage a win against Hougang. They then go up against Tampines Rovers in the Singapore Cup final on Oct. 29.

Their nearest rivals are Tampines in third place,...

Aqhari Abdullah seeks patience over Home United's first S.League win

Home United midfielder Aqhari Abdullah has urged the fans to be patient as they go in search of their first S.League win of the season against Brunei DPMM on Friday.

The Protectors have played some spectacular football in their opening three matches but have only yielded two points -- 2-2 vs. Warriors, 1-1 vs. Tampines Rovers and a 1-0 loss away to Hougang United.

Despite lacking in points, the former LionsXII midfielder is confident the team have what it takes to get their title challenge back...

Malaysia FA Cup hero Safuwan Baharudin revels in Singapore banter

Despite being reminded of the fierce Singapore-Malaysia sporting rivalry, former LionsXII utility Safuwan Baharudin is making a big impression on, and off the pitch, in his first season with Malaysia Super League (MSL) club, PDRM FA.

The Singapore international set up his team's first goal and scored the second as the Malaysian police side upset local rivals Selangor, 2-1, in the Malaysia FA Cup third round on Friday night.

The result eliminates the 2015 Malaysia Cup champions who had made an unbeaten...
