LA Galaxy sign Norway defender Jorgen Skjelvik on free transfer

Jorgen Skjelvik was a free agent after spending four seasons with Rosenborg.

CARSON, Calif. -- Norwegian defender Jorgen Skjelvik has joined the LA Galaxy on a free transfer.

The five-time MLS champions announced the deal with Skjelvik on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Skjelvik joined Norwegian powerhouse Rosenborg in 2013 and played on three Eliteserien title-winning teams. He recorded six goals and 13 assists while appearing in 163 games for the club in central defense.

Skjelvik also has played six games for Norway, including two recent appearances in World Cup qualifiers.

Ashley Cole has told ESPN FC that Chelsea can still challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title, and claims the Arsenal "Invincibles" side he was part of would beat Pep Guardiola's men.

City have made a stunning start to the season, winning 12 of their 13 games and drawing the other to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

LA Galaxy decline option on Jermaine Jones; Mike Grella, Red Bulls split

Following Michael Bradley's comments aimed at Columbus, the FC guys evaluate if the midfielder's words hold any weight.

The LA Galaxy declined their option on former United States midfielder Jermaine Jones on the final day for MLS non-playoff teams to make contract option decisions.

Jones, 36, made 20 appearances for the Galaxy this season but failed to help LA to a postseason spot in the Western Conference. 

In all, the Galaxy declined their option on 13 players, leaving just 13 of their 30 roster spots for 2018 currently filled, including those players who were out of contract.

Mexico will be without Giovani dos Santos for Monday's match against Poland in Gdansk.

The LA Galaxy player has a minor injury and won't be risked by coach Juan Carlos Osorio.

"He's got a small muscle complaint and we want to protect him so unfortunately he can't play," said Osorio in Sunday's pregame news conference.

Dos Santos' season is over with the Galaxy out of the MLS playoffs, and his next official game could be next March, when the 2018 MLS season begins.
