Zamalek stumble, Al Ahly triumph as Cairo giants steal headlines in CAF Champions League

The different fortunes of Cairo giants Al Ahly and Zamalek was the notable narrative of this past weekend's CAF Champions League action.

Al Ahly put one foot in the group phase with their 2-0 away win over Equatorial Guinea's Cano Sport, but cross-city rivals Zamalek face potential elimination from Africa's top-tier continental competition after they succumbed 2-1 away to Senegalese side Generation Foot.

Zamalek gambled by resting several regulars, with one eye on their coming Super Cup match against...

Former Chiefs, Pirates star Marc Batchelor shot dead

Former Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates footballer Marc Batchelor was shot dead outside his home in Johannesburg on Monday, police have confirmed.

The 49-year-old striker, who also played for Mamelodi Sundowns, was shot in his car. Another person in the vehicle was unharmed in the incident.

"He was attacked by two men who were driving a motorbike," a police spokesman told the South African Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday.

"He was about to drive into his premises. The suspects shot several times...

Jeremy Brockie on target as Mamelodi Sundowns cruise to CAF Champions League win

New Zealand international Jeremy Brockie scored for Mamelodi Sundowns as they claimed a 2-0 victory away at Equatorial Guinea side Leones Vegetarianos in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie on Wednesday.

Translated as 'Vegetarian Lions', the Guinea side proved easy meat for Sundowns as Themba Zwane added a to make them overwhelming favourites to advance to the next stage.

The 2016 winners never looked troubled, and should have won by a greater margin but for some bad...

Sundowns and Pirates draw as Bloem Celtic stun Bidvest Wits

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates played to a goalless draw in their crunch Absa Premiership clash at Loftus Stadium on Saturday, while 10-man Bidvest Wits lost 2-1 at home after a late rally from Bloemfontein Celtic.

Pirates extended their lead at the top of the table to three points ahead of Wits, though they have played two games more.

Perhaps the big talking point in their clash with Sundowns was a skirmish between the two dugouts late in the first half as a home fan appeared to make his...

Sundowns, Pirates primed for top-of-the-table clash

Two of this season's Absa Premiership title contenders go head to head on Saturday when defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns host in-form Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Sundowns have stuttered along in the defence of their title, but looked much more assured and clinical in the midweek 3-1 home success over Free State Stars.

There was finally a goal for New Zealand forward Jeremy Brockie after a wait of 378 days and 35 matches, while Uruguayan forward Gaston Sirino showed...
