Aguero a 5/10 as his missed penalty cost Man City in loss at Spurs

Sergio Aguero's missed penalty puts Man City in a precarious position in their Champions League quarterfinal.

LONDON -- Son Heung-Min's 78th-minute strike gave Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 win over Manchester City and a narrow advantage from the Champions League quarterfinal first leg. Sergio Aguero had an 11th-minute penalty saved by Hugo Lloris after a Raheem Sterling shot struck Danny Rose on the hand before Son's strike late on secured a 1-0 win.

Positives

Despite the defeat, City will still see themselves as slight favourites for next Wednesday's second leg at the Etihad Stadium. It's certain to be a tense occasion, but City are in a better position than they were at the same stage last season when they went into the home leg with a three-goal deficit against Liverpool. Tottenham are likely to be without the influential Harry Kane after he limped down the tunnel, although Spurs improved when he left the pitch.

Negatives

The tie could have taken a much different direction had Aguero tucked away his penalty. The decision was another contentious handball awarded after an intervention from the Video Assistant Referee when no one inside Tottenham's new 62,000-capacity stadium were aware of any appeal. But once it had been given, the normally reliable Aguero wasted a golden opportunity take an early advantage.

Manager rating out of 10

7 -- Pep Guardiola sprung a surprise in his starting lineup with Kevin De Bruyne left on the bench while Bernardo Silva was forced to miss the game as a precaution after a tweaking a groin in training. But more surprisingly he recalled Fabian Delph and Riyad Mahrez and City were a little short of their usual pace on the break. After conceding three goals away from home in their previous two Champions League exits, it was a more cautious approach than usual from a side that has blitzed their way to within sight of an unprecedented quadruple.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Ederson, 7 -- A couple of smart saves, confidently controlled his box and set-piece situations and, as ever, ice cool with the ball at his feet.

DF Kyle Walker, 6 -- More conservative than usual with his forward runs and stuck to his task of trying to stop attacking thrusts from Christian Eriksen.

DF Nicolas Otamendi, 7 -- Had an epic physical tussle with Kane and just about got away with some hairy moments.

DF Aymeric Laporte, 6 -- Seemed to lose his composure after a slightly harsh yellow card but was back on it in the second half. His passes out of defence weren't quite as slick as usual.

DF Fabian Delph, 6 -- A surprise starter and was mostly solid against Son until he failed to get a tackle in for the decisive moment.

MF Fernandinho, 6 -- Tottenham tried to keep the ball away from the Brazilian and he couldn't have the same influence on the game.

MF Ilkay Gundogan, 8 -- Looked the most dynamic in the centre of midfield and was the player who gave most impetus to City attacks.

MF David Silva, 6 -- Interesting battle with Harry Winks. At times his experience showed, but the Spurs youngster never stopped fighting to curb his impact.

FW Riyad Mahrez, 7 -- Shock starter. Had a couple of good dribbles and took on extra responsibility to work back.

FW Sergio Aguero, 5 -- Poor penalty and didn't have his shooting boots on all night when City needed an away goal.

FW Raheem Sterling, 7 -- Had the beating of England teammate Kieran Trippier on several occasions and forced the penalty decision with a cut inside and shot.

Substitutes

FW Gabriel Jesus, N/R -- Offered more mobility up front but was caught offside too often.

FW Leroy Sane, N/R -- A late change.

MF Kevin De Bruyne, N/R -- Too late to make an impact.
