A tribute to Pape Diouf, Africa's pioneer into European football

The world of African football was plunged into mourning on March 31, following the news that Senegalese journalist-turned-agent Pape Diouf, the first black chairman of a club in a major European league, had become the continent's first high-profile sporting loss to the coronavirus.

Various African football figures throughout history could reasonably be classed as pioneers, but Diouf, who was appointed Olympique de Marseille president in 2005, held a position of power, prominence and influence within...

Ex-Marseille president Pape Diouf dies from coronavirus

Pape Diouf, right, died at the age of 68 from the coronavirus.

Former Marseille president Pape Diouf died on Tuesday after contracting the coronavirus, the French club has confirmed.

Diouf, 68, was admitted to hospital in his native Senegal over the weekend and required breathing assistance.

The man who led OM from 2005 to 2009 was due to be flown to Nice this week but his deteriorating condition made that impossible.

Diouf was well-regarded in the French game and Marseille wished him well in his battle against COVID-19 via social media just hours before...

Marseille dropped points for the second time in three games as they wasted a two-goal lead in a 2-2 home draw against lowly Amiens on Friday.

Second-placed Marseille, who lost to Nantes two weeks ago, went ahead with goals by Morgan Sanson and Dimitri Payet but conceded the draw in stoppage time when Saman Ghoddos netted the equaliser shortly after Serhou Guirassy had reduced the arrears.

Marseille manager Andre Villas-Boas was shown a red card at the end of the match for launching a verbal...

Dario Benedetto scored a hat trick as Olympique de Marseille claimed a 3-2 win at Nimes to cement their second place in Ligue 1 on Friday.

The home opened the scoring through Zinedine Ferhat before Benedetto struck twice before the interval and once after to put OM on 55 points from 27 games with Lucas Deaux reducing the arrears in stoppage tie.

They trail leaders Paris Saint-Germain by 10 points but lead third-placed Rennes, who travel to bottom side Toulouse on Saturday, by 11.

Second-placed Olympique de Marseille slumped to a 3-1 home defeat against Nantes as their 14-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1 ended after almost four months on Saturday.

Kader Bamba's goal and Alvaro's own goal, both in the second half, earned Nantes all three points after OM midfielder Morgan Sanson had cancelled out Anthony Limbombe's opener as the Provence side suffered their first defeat since they lost 4-0 at Paris St Germain on Oct. 27.
