Singapore's Izwan Mahbud sees Japan tour as Thailand gauge for Suzuki Cup

Singapore goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud vs. Japan
Izwan kept a clean sheet against the superstars of Japan in an AFC World Cup qualifier last June.

Singapore's upcoming tour of Japan will be a good gauge for the Lions as they step up preparations for November's AFF Suzuki Cup, according to Tampines goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud.

Coach V. Sundramoorthy will take his squad to Japan from July 17 to 25 where they will play J-League club Albirex Niigata, a college team made up of Albirex reserves and a local Japanese university side.

Izwan, 25, is no stranger to Japanese football, having gone on a trial with J2 club Matsumoto Yamaga FC last November when...

Singapore star Izwan Mahbud's freezing introduction to Japan

Singapore goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud's one-week trial at Matsumoto Yamaga FC got off to a cold start with more than 60 fans turning up at his first training to catch the LionsXII star in action.

Having gained overnight stardom as the 'Singapore Spiderman' who singlehandedly repelled 18 shots to force a goalless draw against Singapore in an AFC World Cup qualifier earlier this year, the 25-year-old is in Japan trying to earn a playing contract with second-tier side Matsumoto Yamaga.

His first training...

Singapore and LionsXII goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud will be hoping to fulfil his childhood dream of playing in a top Asian football league when he travels to Japan on Tuesday for a one-week trial with J-League side Matsumoto Yamaga FC.

Having just ended their season in J-League Division 1, the Ptarmigans were relegated and are rebuilding a team strong enough to challenge for promotion in the upcoming year. Coached by former Japanese international midfielder Yasuharu Sorimachi, Yamaga regularly fills...

After Izwan Mahbud's 18 heroic saves in Singapore's goalless draw against mighty Japan in their World Cup qualifier earlier this month, three Singapore U14 footballers are having a taste of what it is like to train with J.League club, Matsutomo Yamaga FC.

In collaboration with Epson, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) handpicked the three U14 footballers from the National Football Academy (NFA) to spend a week in Japan. They will be training with Yamaga FC's U14 team in the Nagano prefecture.
