Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory looking for upsets in A-League semis

Melbourne Victory have won their elimination final match against Adelaide United in front of an excited home crowd.
Two goals in the second half proved invaluable as Melbourne City progressed to week two of the finals to face the Newcastle Jets.

The top four A-League teams have predictably ended up in the semifinals, but there could yet be surprises in store for the season's end.

On paper, Sydney FC remains the strongest side and firm favourites to claim championship glory. Having beaten their upcoming opponents Melbourne Victory in their last seven encounters, this status is more than justified.

Warren Joyce responsible for Melbourne City's new mental edge - Luke Brattan

Two goals in the second half proved invaluable as Melbourne City progressed to week two of the finals to face the Newcastle Jets.
Melbourne Victory have won their elimination final match against Adelaide United in front of an excited home crowd.

A new-found mental edge has Melbourne City poised to end their A-League Grand Final drought when they face Newcastle Jets on Friday.

That's the feeling from Luke Brattan, who sees demonstrable improvement in City under new coach Warren Joyce.

Brattan says the meticulous Joyce has made his mark and it's showing in their results.

"You look at a few games this year...

Two goals in the second half proved invaluable as Melbourne City progressed to week two of the finals to face the Newcastle Jets.

Melbourne City are through to the A-League's final four after beating Brisbane Roar 2-0 in their elimination final.

Warren Joyce's side delivered on their season of promise on Friday night at AAMI Park, bossing the Roar from the start with second-half strikes to Stefan Mauk and Nick Fitzgerald securing victory.

City might have won by a bigger margin but they'll gratefully take their prize; a semifinal away to Newcastle next Friday.

Brisbane barely fired a shot -- metaphorically or literally -- against...

A Sarpreet Singh gave Wellington Phoenix hope of avoiding the A-League wooden spoon and dented the confidence of Melbourne City on the eve of the finals.

The 19-year-old showed why he's a bright light in an otherwise dismal year for the Phoenix in their 2-1 victory on Saturday night, breaking a 1-1 half time stalemate with a strike that took a deflection past City keeper Dean Bouzanis.

Caretaker coach Chris Greenacre was ecstatic his team weathered City's early pressure and fought back to show fans...
