'Haaland celebration' sees Uruguay keeper sent off, team concedes two late goals

Steve Nicol explains how Dortmund gives Erling Haaland a platform to take his game to an even higher level.

A goalkeeper with Uruguayan first division club Cerro Largo was red carded, having wound up opponents Nacional -- only for them to score twice against 10 men in stoppage-time and rescue a draw.

Washington Aguerre was booked in the first half for celebrating Cerro's opening goal seated in the lotus position similar to that made famous by Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund in last week's Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain.

Aguerre, who has spent most of his career with Nacional's...

Nacional punished for fans' Chapecoense plane crash taunts

Nacional fans watch their team in action against Chapecoense in the Copa Libertadores.
At least two Nacional fans mocked the plane crash that killed 71 people.

CONMEBOL have fined Nacional and ordered the Uruguayan club to play their next three games behind closed doors after some supporters mocked the plane crash that killed most of Brazilian squad Chapecoense two years ago.

The disciplinary court of the South American governing body announced the sanction and the $80,000 fine late on Monday.

At least two Nacional fans made gestures with their arms imitating a plane crash during Nacional's 1-0 victory at Chapecoense on Jan. 31 in the first leg of a Copa...

Chapecoense knocked out of Copa Libertadores by Nacional

Brazil's Chapecoense was knocked out by Uruguay's Nacional in the Copa Libertadores.

MONTEVIDEO -- Brazil's Chapecoense have been knocked out of the prestigious Copa Libertadores after a surprising qualification for the South American cup last year.

The Brazilians lost to Uruguay's Nacional 1-0 on Wednesday, the same score of the first leg in the pre-group match.

Chapecoense qualified for the tournament only one year after they lost 19 players in an air crash in Colombia in November 2016.

Nacional's goals in both matches were scored by Santiago Romero. The Uruguayan club will play...

Club football in Uruguay struggling against global pressures

Nacional were the last Uruguayan team to win the Copa Libertadores back in 1988.

The Uruguayan Primera Division got underway this weekend with one of its teams missing.

On the eve of the kickoff, El Tanque Sisley pulled out due to not being able to pay their debts. And so the championship proceeds with the awkward, odd number of 15 participating clubs.

The size of the debt in question seems, by the standard of global football, almost laughably puny. El Tanque Sisley allegedly owe some $357,000, but have only been able to raise around $250,000.

Uruguay is limited by its size....

Chapecoense want Nacional expelled from Copa Lib for fan behaviour

ASUNCION, Paraguay -- Brazilian football club Chapecoense have asked South America's football governing body to expel Uruguayan club Nacional from the Copa Libertadores after some of their fans mocked the plane crash that killed most of the Chapecoense squad two years ago.

Chapecoense said Friday they asked CONMEBOL to postpone the teams' second-leg match on Wednesday if it can't make a ruling on their request by then. The request is based on tournament rules set by CONMEBOL that make clubs responsible...
