Aaron Tshibola rescued a point for Aston Villa as Newcastle blew the chance to close in on Sky Bet Championship leaders Norwich.

The midfielder headed in an 87th minute equaliser for the hosts to secure a 1-1 draw after Tommy Elphick's first-half own goal looked to have won it for the Magpies.

Dwight Gayle and Mo Diame had chances to finish Villa off and the visitors paid the price late on, having been given let-offs when Mile Jedinak had a goal disallowed and Jordan Ayew hit the post.

Yoan Gouffran smashed home another stunning volley as Newcastle gained revenge over Wolves and eased their way into the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

The Frenchman, who scored in spectacular style in a 2-0 Championship victory at Derby earlier this month, repeated the trick to seal a win by the same scoreline at St James' Park, where Wolves had emerged victorious in the league on Saturday.

Matt Ritchie, having provided the 31st-minute cross from which Gouffran struck, had earlier fired Rafael Benitez's...

Newcastle United can be 'head of mouse' - boss Rafa Benitez

Rafa Benitez
Rafa Benitez wants Newcastle to show they can manage games.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has called on his side to show that they can be "the head of a mouse" as they prepare to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup.

Benitez used an old Spanish phrase to say the Magpies needed to show they could cope with the pressure of a challenge for promotion from the Championship.

They were beaten 2-0 by Wolves in the league on Saturday and now face them again as they try to make progress in the cup.

"Sometimes you prefer to be the tail of the lion or the...

DeAndre Yedlin settling in nicely at Newcastle after an uncertain start

ESPN FC's Alexis Nunes highlights the top American performers this past weekend, with DeAndre Yedlin headlining.
Yedlin scored his first Newcastle goal last week and gets regular minutes off the bench. It's a good sign for the U.S. star.

If DeAndre Yedlin had any doubts about how invested Newcastle United is in his future, they were dispelled immediately after his first training session with the club. Manager Rafa Benitez took Yedlin aside and proceeded to spend 30 minutes with him discussing all manner of topics, from the system Benitez wants to play to Yedlin's place in it.

"I think it's very important to feel wanted at the club," said Yedlin during the recently concluded international break. "And I think just by [Benitez]...
