Former Aston Villa defender Chris Herd opted out of his Perth Glory contract due to family reasons.

Perth Glory's hopes of title success have been dealt an unexpected blow, with star signing Chris Herd performing a major backflip by opting out of his contract with the A-League club.

Herd was due to arrive in Perth next week after signing a two-year deal with Glory in May.

But the Socceroos midfielder asked for the contract to be terminated because he was unable to relocate to Australia with his family and Glory granted the request.

"After considerable deliberation and in the best interests of...

Rhys Williams
Rhys Williams' Middlesbrough career was cruelled by a succession of achilles injuries.

Forgotten Socceroo Rhys Williams has put his international dreams on the backburner while he attempts to reignite his stalled career at Perth in the A-League.

Williams has been ravaged by injuries over the past three years, with two achilles tendon ruptures cutting short his promising career at Middlesbrough -- a club he once captained.

Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe has signed on for two more years.

Perth Glory's bid to become the best team in the A-League is a step closer after re-signing coach Kenny Lowe, but former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer won't be part of the club's bold plans.

Lowe's two-year contract extension ties him to the club until the end of the 2018-19 season, putting him on track to eclipse Mich d'Avray (2001-04) as Glory's longest-serving coach.

The 54-year-old has played a key role in assembling one of the best squads in the A-League, with his previous stint at the...

Perth Glory's Diego Castro
Perth Glory have re-signed Diego Castro for the 2016-17 season.

Perth Glory have re-signed the A-League's player of the season, Diego Castro, for the 2016-17 campaign.

The Spanish winger who scored 13 goals last season, went on to be named the A-League's player of the year and has signed on to stay with the club for the 2016-17 season.

"After the year we've just had, I feel we have a lot of unfinished business at Perth Glory and I want to win a championship," Castro said.

"Nothing more would make me happy than to be part of a revitalised team that's ready to...

A-League Report Cards: Adelaide United top the class, CCM fail

Adelaide United has claimed its first A-League title with a 3-1 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Grand Final.

Rob Brooks casts his eye over the best and worst of the 2015-16 A-League season.

Grade: A+
Regular season finish: First
Top goal-scorer: Bruce Djite (11)
Player of the season: Isaias. The Spaniard blended dogged defence with expert distribution, and scored from a sublime free kick in the Grand Final.
Overall: The Reds collected the premiership/championship double on the back of an astonishing run which saw them lose just one of their last 21 matches. That did not seem likely after...
