Portland's playoff hopes; LA, FCD in Shield battle; Toronto clinging to first

ESPN FC's Alejandro Moreno breaks down the best in MLS, including a top-class free kick and an accidental back-heel goal.

With the playoff picture starting to take shape, it's crunch time for teams hoping to sneak in and those looking to secure top seeds. Jason Davis takes a look around the league in the Week 30 edition of MLS W2W4.

Portland could miss postseason

There's no other way to say it: The Portland Timbers are a desperate team. Thanks to a feast-or-famine run of form (Portland is 4-4-0 in their last five matches), an inability to win on the road (the Timbers are the only team in the league without a single...

New York Red Bulls advance with draw; Portland Timbers rally to stay alive

Red Bulls action vs Antigua CCL
Gonzalo Veron, right, had his effort on goal broken up by Antigua keeper Victor Bolivar.

A goalless draw against Antigua on Tuesday was enough for the New York Red Bulls to clinch top spot in Group F of the CONCACAF Champions League and book passage to the knockout round.

Jesse Marsch took a strong side to Guatemala, but the Guatemalan hosts proved a tough out for the Eastern Conference leaders in Major League Soccer.

Knowing a draw was enough to advance, New York sat back and ceded 60 percent of the possession to Antigua. The tactic worked as the Red Bulls...

Galaxy, Timbers plummet as Sounders soar in MLS Power Rankings

LA went 1-0 up early, but Seattle stormed back, with Jordan Morris nabbing a brace, and claiming the comeback win.

Toronto FC held on to the top spot in this week's Major League Soccer Power Rankings despite being without Sebastian Giovinco again, while the Seattle Sounders, D.C. United and Columbus Crew SC continue their climbs.

1. Toronto FC (no change)
Giovinco, who was expected to play barring a setback, did not feature on Saturday against the Philadelphia Union. This isn't good news for Toronto, but give the Reds credit for fighting back to draw 1-1 at home.

2. FC Dallas (no change)
No goals for FC...

Orlando City, Portland Timbers, LA Galaxy wilt in the MLS spotlight

Check out the best plays from Saturday night of Week 29 of the MLS season.

With Major League Soccer's Week 29 in the books, Jason Davis takes a look back at the top storylines from the weekend.

ESPN FC's MLS Team of the Weekend.

Playoff pandemonium

Entering the weekend, the task was clear for a number of MLS teams still not assured of a place in the playoff field. Win, or put those playoff hopes in serious jeopardy. At the very least, a loss was out of the question -- considering the stakes, it was reasonable to think that the teams in question would put forth everything they had to avoid such a result.

New York Red Bulls clinch playoffs spot; Toronto, Union share points

Montreal were unable to break down the high-flying Red Bulls, falling 1-0 at home, but still remain in the race for the playoffs.

Daniel Royer scored his first MLS goal in the 60th minute as the New York Red Bulls clinched a playoff berth for the seventh straight year with a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday night.

Royer headed down Chris Duvall's cross, bouncing it into the right corner. The Austrian international joined New York on Aug. 3.

Bradley Wright-Phillips' six-game scoring streak came to an end, but the Red Bulls took a share of the top spot in the Eastern Conference, tied at 48 points with Toronto...
