Nicky Ajose's first Charlton goal of the season gave the Addicks a precious 1-0 victory over League One play-off rivals Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Ajose bagged the winner five minutes before half-time, slotting calmly past goalkeeper Luke McGee after strike partner Josh Magennis had nodded the ball into his path.

Both teams started nervously but Charlton were unlucky not to take the lead in the 21st minute.

Jake Forster-Caskey saw his long-range shot deflected wide and from the resulting corner Forster-Caskey's...

Bradford dented the Sky Bet League One play-off hopes of Portsmouth with only their second win in 16 matches.

Pompey had the chance to move into the top six but were denied by Nat Knight-Percival, substitute Matthew Lund and leading scorer Charlie Wyke - who gave the Bantams a 3-1 victory.

Knight-Percival put Bradford in front in the 14th minute. Tony McMahon's corner was headed into the defender's path by Matt Kilgallon and Knight-Percival hooked the ball high into the net.

Colin Doyle then made two...

Plymouth slipped to sixth as they survived late drama to claim a goalless draw against close play-off rivals Portsmouth.

Pompey winger Jamal Lowe rounded Argyle stand-in keeper Kyle Letheren in the last minute of normal time but his shot was cleared off the line by Plymouth's on-loan Bristol City central defender Zak Vyner.

Seconds later Portsmouth skipper Brett Pitman's powerful stoppage-time header crashed off the face of the bar.

That was as close as either side came to scoring in an engrossing encounter...

Paul Cook endured a miserable return to Fratton Park as promotion-seeking Wigan lost 2-1 at play-off chasers Portsmouth.

A first-half penalty from captain Brett Pitman and Jamal Lowe's second-half effort were enough to lead Pompey to victory over their former manager.

Substitute Will Grigg's late goal proved no more than a consolation strike for Wigan.

Pitman slotted Pompey in front from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time after Dan Burn had been adjudged to have fouled Ben Close.

Portsmouth moved to within two points of the play-off places with a third successive win as they beat struggling Walsall 1-0 to consign new boss Dean Keates to a second straight loss in charge.

The visitors controlled the first half and Ben Close should have done better than scuff a close-range volley straight at Walsall goalkeeper Liam Roberts from Gareth Evans' 12th-minute cross.

Pompey's 18-goal top scorer Brett Pitman twice glanced headers wide while Close volleyed off-target when Dion Donohue's...
