Jordan Hugill's early deflected goal earned Preston a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Wigan at Deepdale in the first league meeting between the north-west rivals since 2005.

Hugill deflected in Aiden McGeady's strike for the game's only goal, enough to secure a third win of the season for a Preston side that moved to 18th in the Championship table.

But it was a fifth defeat in six for Gary Caldwell's Wigan, themselves spurning chances as Will Grigg failed to add to his five goals so far this term.

Eddie Howe unimpressed with 'disappointing' Bournemouth display

Simon Makienok's hat trick gave Preston a surprise win at Bournemouth.
Preston's Simon Makienok completed his hat trick in extra time to beat Bournemouth.

Eddie Howe was left bemoaning the performance of his Bournemouth side after his decision to field fringe players backfired in a shock EFL Cup defeat to Preston.

Simon Makienok scored a hat trick for the Championship side as they secured a 3-2 win at the Vitality Stadium after extra time.

The Denmark international grabbed his first goal for Preston on 11 minutes but Bournemouth rallied in the second half.

Simon Makienok scored a hat trick as Preston sprung an EFL Cup shock by beating a much-changed Bournemouth in extra time to progress to the fourth round.

Eddie Howe made 11 changes to his Cherries side and they were humbled by their Championship opponents as Makienok struck his first goals for Preston to seal a 3-2 win.

The Denmark international opened the scoring early on before Lewis Grabban's penalty and Dan Gosling's close-range finish looked to be enough to put the hosts through.

But Makienok...

A Scott Hogan hat-trick helped Brentford to a comprehensive 5-0 rout of Preston in the Sky Bet Championship.

Skipper Harlee Dean and a Chris Humphrey own goal compounded the misery for Simon Grayson's side as four strikes in 13 second-half minutes sealed their fate.

There was little sign of the final scoreline at the break, when Brentford led 1-0, and Preston should have taken the lead with 13 minutes gone.

Callum Robinson pinged a superb diagonal ball from left to right to find the incoming Jordan...
