Nicklas Bendtner is set to serve jail time after dropping his appeal on an assault conviction.

Former Arsenal and Juventus forward Nicklas Bendtner will have to serve a 50-day jail sentence after dropping his appeal against an assault conviction.

Earlier this month, Bendtner was found guilty of beating and kicking a cab driver in the Danish capital on Sept. 9. The 30-year-old Dane admitted to hitting the man, but said he had acted in self-defence after a quarrel over the fare.

Bendtner was sentenced to 50 days in prison and fined 1,500 kroner ($230).

Denmark international Nicklas Bendtner was convicted of assaulting a taxi driver and sentenced to 50 days in jail on Friday by a city court in Copenhagen, but walked free from the courtroom pending an appeal hearing.

The 30-year-old striker, who plays for Norwegian club side Rosenborg, has appealed against the sentence, his lawyer said, and he was released until the hearing in a higher court.

"We think that it's not good for the club and not good for Nicklas, but he remains a player in the club....

Former Denmark international Nicklas Bendtner's lawyer has said his client is innocent of wrongdoing in an incident involving a cab driver in Copenhagen early on Sunday morning.

Bendtner, who now plays for Norwegian side Rosenborg, apologised for the episode, saying he had been "involved in a very unpleasant situation at around 2 a.m. Sunday. I am of course extremely sorry about the outcome."

Nicklas Bendtner was reported to the police by a Copenhagen taxi driver who claims the Danish striker was behind a violent attack early on Sunday.

The taxi driver had undergone surgery for a broken jaw, a spokesman for taxi firm Dantaxa told Reuters.

Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet cited unnamed sources saying Bendtner was arrested early on Sunday, charged with violence, but later released by the police.

Having just turned 29, Nicklas Bendtner marked his birthday by sharing an eyebrow-raising photo of himself via social media.

As a little treat for his legion of Instagram followers, the Denmark international and ex-Arsenal striker whipped off his shirt, clambered onto his steed and posed for a seductive glamour shot.

Unmistakable shades of Vladimir Putin on horseback there, though whether or not that was the effect Bendtner, now with Rosenborg, was aiming for is debatable.
