New York Red Bulls start CONCACAF Champions League campaign with win over Atletico Pantoja

An own goal and a Daniel Royer tally gave the New York Red Bulls a 2-0 win over Atletico Pantoja in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League opening-round series on Wednesday at Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

The Red Bulls went on top in the 39th minute when a Bradley Wright-Phillips side volley was saved by Pantoja goalie Odalis Baez, only to see the ball ricochet back off Jean Innocent into the net.

It's no secret that Liga MX clubs have dominated North America's top club competition. Since the beginning of the "Champions League" era of the CONCACAF tournament in 2008, Mexican teams have amassed 10 titles in the 10 editions of the event. This year, four Liga MX teams will be tasked with making it 11 out of 11: Tigres, Santos Laguna, Monterrey and Toluca.

AC Milan signee Lucas Paqueta was among the winners of Brazil's prestigious Bola de Prata (Silver Ball) awards on Monday.

The 21-year-old Flamengo midfielder completed a €35 million deal to join the seven-time European champions in January and was one of a number of recipients of Brazil's top club honours during a ceremony, being named to the team of the season alongside Palmeiras' Dudu, who was given the Bola de Ouro (Golden Ball) for the top player of the Brazilian championship.

Liga MX playoffs: Cruz Azul, Monterrey advance to semifinals

No. 1 seed Cruz Azul advanced to the Liga MX semfinals following a 1-1 draw (3-1 aggregate) with eighth-seeded Queretaro on Saturday night.
