Struggling Paderborn snatched only their second Bundesliga win of the season on Sunday, beating Werder Bremen 1-0 away with a last-minute goal awarded following a VAR review.

Substitute Sven Michel, who had only been on the pitch for six minutes, swept home Streli Mamba's pass in the 90th minute and, although the goal was initially disallowed for offside against Mamba, referee Sascha Stegemann changed his mind after a lengthy VAR review.

Bremen, themselves a modest 14th in the 18-team table, had...

Wasteful Bayern Munich were made to sweat for a 3-2 win at Paderborn that sent them top of the Bundesliga on Saturday after Leipzig went down 3-1 at home to Schalke for their first loss of the season.

The Bavarians, who squandered a bagful of chances, hit the woodwork and conceded two goals in the second half, took the lead through Serge Gnabry in the 15th minute.

He set up Philippe Coutinho 10 minutes after the restart for their second but Kai Proeger's powerful volley cut the deficit in the 68th.

Philipp Klement celebrates his goal as Paderborn went up.

SC Paderborn completed a remarkable return to the Bundesliga next season despite a 3-1 defeat to Dynamo Dresden on Sunday.

Paderborn, who reached the Bundesliga for the first time in 2014-15, were relegated that season and again the following season to fall to the third tier. In 2016-17, they narrowly avoided a third relegation in three seasons (to the Regionalliga) despite finishing 18th, as 1860 Munich's administration error and failure to secure a licence to play saw them stay up.

Yet, incredibly,...
