Benedikt Howedes signs new Schalke contract until 2020

Benedikt Howedes has made 12 Bundesliga appearances this season.

Schalke have announced that defender Benedikt Howedes has committed his future to his hometown club.

Howedes, 27, is currently in his 15th year at Schalke, and on Wednesday the side's captain put pen to paper on a new contract that ties him to the team until 2020.

The 2014 World Cup winner with Germany, currently sidelined with a muscle tear, was delighted to sign his new deal, and told the club's official website: "My heart was thumping when I put pen to paper.

Wolfsburg's woes on the road continued as they were beaten 3-0 by Schalke - a result which saw Dieter Hecking's men slip to eighth in the Bundesliga.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Johannes Geis struck in the first half, with Alessandro Schopf adding a late third to keep Schalke's push for a place in the Champions League next season alive.

The Royal Blues were good value for the points as Julian Draxler's return to the Veltins Arena ended in bitter disappointment.

The 22-year-old, who spent 14 years on the...

Schalke 04 eye return to German football elite amid intense pressure

Schalke boss Andre Breitenreiter has the club on a solid course despite a tough first season at the demanding club.

Don't adjust your volume just yet. Former Schalke 04 midfielder Julian Draxler ("I'm expecting the worst") might not get to feel the wrath of 60,000 furious spectators at the Veltins-Arena on Saturday after all. The 22-year-old's participation is doubtful because of flu, according to VfL Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking.

Draxler moved to the Volkswagen-Arena for €35 million plus add-ons in the summer after coming through the ranks at Gelsenkirchen. The German international had been a Royal...

Christian Heidel going nowhere - Mainz coach Martin Schmidt

Heidel plans on honouring current contract.

Mainz coach Martin Schmidt insists there is no indication that the club's director of sport Christian Heidel is planning to leave in the summer.

Heidel has been made an offer by Schalke, but stated before their winter break that he intends to honour his contract with Mainz, which still has 18 months left to run.

And that is also how Schmidt sees things.

"He's going to stay," he said. "I cannot see a single sign saying that he should change.

"I think it's all just a storm in a tea cup."

Schmidt...

Leroy Sane should stay at Schalke - Clemens Tonnies

Leroy Sane is reported to be keen on a move to Barcelona or RB Leipzig.

Schalke chief Clemens Tonnies expects Leroy Sane to stay at the club despite strong links with clubs including Barcelona and Manchester City.

Sane, 20, has emerged as one of the Bundesliga's most sought-after players in recent weeks, with a host of elite clubs said to be tracking the winger, while RB Leipzig in Germany's second tier have confirmed their interest.

There has been speculation about a €37 million release clause in his contract, but Schalke have denied that will be the case,...
