Seattle lets chance to cement dynasty status slip away in MLS Cup defeat

TORONTO -- So much of Saturday evening's MLS Cup rematch between the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC inspired déjà vu.

The prematch buildup at BMO Field was just as raucous, if not even more so, than it was last December. The a cappella version of O, Canada from the home crowd brought familiar goosebumps to the fore.

Just as in the 2016 final, TFC controlled the game but struggled to turn that dominance into an actual breakthrough. For an hour, the reigning title-game MVP, Seattle goalkeeper...

TORONTO -- Toronto FC claimed the 2017 MLS Cup final with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, completing the first domestic treble in MLS history.

Toronto was utterly dominant on the night but had to wait until the 67th minute to find a breakthrough, as Jozy Altidore lifted the ball over Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei on a breakaway for the first goal. Four minutes into stoppage time, Victor Vazquez iced the match, converting after Armando Cooper's shot hit the post.

Can history-making Toronto get MLS Cup revenge over red-hot Seattle?

EA Sports simulated the 2017 MLS Cup between Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders on FIFA 18, but who comes out on top?

It's deja vu all over again as Toronto FC hosts the Seattle Sounders in the 2017 MLS Cup final at BMO Field on Saturday (4 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN).

Toronto FC

Strengths

Coach Greg Vanney has a variety of weapons at his disposal, but it all starts up front in attack with the forward pair of Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco, who have combined for 33 goals in 2017. Even with a sore ankle, Altidore will be banging against Seattle's big center backs Roman Torres and Chad Marshall, and...

City of Toronto's embrace of MLS Cup run has the Reds under pressure

EA Sports simulated the 2017 MLS Cup between Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders on FIFA 18, but who comes out on top?

TORONTO -- Most of the attention within the sporting circles of Canada's largest city was fixated on the early-season showdown between the hometown Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night at Air Canada Centre.

Toronto has the second-most points in the NHL's Eastern Conference. Led by a burgeoning young superstar named Auston Matthews, the Leafs have as legitimate of hopes for ending their 50-year Stanley Cup drought as they have in ages.

This is a hockey town, first and foremost...

Toronto-Seattle a rematch of evolved teams fighting for the same prize

Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey and goalkeeper Stefan Frei discuss last year's MLS Cup and the road to returning this season.

TORONTO -- The quest to repeat as champions, or even return to a championship final, is littered with obstacles, most of them mental. Some mainstays fail to replicate the form of the previous year. Other players move on in search of bigger challenges at another club, or chafe at being stuck in the same role. New arrivals fail to make an impact. Most of all, mustering the Herculean effort required to reach a final gets eaten away by complacency.

It's doubly impressive then that both the Seattle...

The stats behind Toronto and Seattle's quest to make history at MLS Cup

Out of the bundles of stats and data extracted for Saturday's MLS Cup final (4 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN), there are several choice nuggets of information that spark one's interest.

1. History is calling for both teams

Whether Toronto FC would go down in history as the greatest MLS team ever if it wins Saturday is a point that could be debated until the cows come home. Many will point to the early days of D.C. United, or one of the LA Galaxy teams from earlier this decade, but certainly TFC,...
