Timbers-Sounders remains MLS' premier rivalry, even though faces have changed

Gear up for the 100th installment of Portland Timbers-Seattle Sounders FC with a look back at the most memorable moments from MLS's most heated rivalry.
Alejandro Moreno hands out his awards for the best and worst from Week 10 in MLS.

The Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders have been playing soccer against each other for so long now that it's possible to break up the history of the rivalry into several distinct eras. Sunday's match at Providence Park (4 p.m. ET, ESPN) is significant as it will be the 100th meeting between these teams.

Seattle and Toronto won the past two MLS Cups -- why are they at the bottom of the league?

Alejandro Moreno and Herculez Gomez break down everything that went wrong for Toronto against Chivas in the 1st leg of the CCL final.

For the past two years, both Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders have stood atop the MLS mountaintop. Seven weeks into the 2018 season, however, the 2016 and 2017 finalists have been anything but dominant in league play.

It's still very early; look no further than Seattle's 2016 season to show that a team can overcome poor form as late as July to make a run to the playoffs and win MLS Cup. All the same, should fans of the two sides be feeling a little worried?

For Toronto FC, despite a 1-3-0...

MLS wins in CONCACAF Champions League can ease U.S. toxicity

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Three thoughts following Chivas Guadalajara's 3-0 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal second-leg win against the Seattle Sounders that sees them advance to the semifinals 3-1 on aggregate.

1. Chivas pegs one back in Liga MX-MLS rivalry

Just as it appeared Major League Soccer teams were in for a perfect week in CONCACAF Champions League play against Liga MX opposition after Toronto FC and the New York Red Bulls advanced, all-Mexican outfit Chivas -- the least likely Liga...

With the return legs of the CONCACAF Champions League kicking off on Tuesday, and all three MLS sides holding advantages over their Liga MX opponents, Jeff Carlisle and Tom Marshall highlight what to expect when the New York Red Bulls and Tijuana, Toronto FC and Tigres and the Seattle Sounders and Chivas all reconvene.

As Sounders age, Schmetzer will need to get out of his tactical comfort zone

Kasey Keller and Alejandro Moreno examine how Seattle's looming CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Chivas impacted their loss to LAFC.

Although the deck was stacked against him in lots of ways, Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer did have a few advantages when he took over from Sigi Schmid in the summer of 2016.

As Schmid's longtime top assistant, and having previously been the head coach of the Sounders in the USL, Schmetzer knew the roster intimately. For more than seven years, he had imagined himself in Schmid's shoes, paying close attention to what he'd copy as well as what he'd do differently.

Such institutional knowledge...
