Shanghai Shenhua announce Quique Sanchez Flores as new manager

Quique Sanchez Flores left Watford earlier this year.

Former Watford and Espanyol manager Quique Sanchez Flores has been named as the new head coach of Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, the club said on Tuesday.

The Spaniard replaces Wu Jingui, who takes over as sporting director after steering Shenhua to victory in the Chinese FA Cup in 2017.

Sanchez Flores has not worked since April, when he was dismissed by Spanish side Espanyol after almost two years at the helm. The former Real Madrid and Spain defender makes the move to China having...

Wellington Phoenix's move for Obafemi Martins falls through

A Wellington Phoenix bid to sign veteran Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins to a marquee A-League contract has failed.

Former Inter Milan and Newcastle United star Martins will make it a priority to recover from a long-term leg injury while still on the books of Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

The Australian intermediary between Shenhua and Phoenix, agent Ante Alilovic, told SBS the 33-year-old wasn't tempted by the offer.

"I don't think the A-League is a serious option in terms of what he can earn...

Zhang Li given six-game ban for 'causing chaos' in Demba Ba clash

The Chinese football authorities have banned Changchun Yatai's Zhang Li for six games after he was found guilty of "causing chaos" during an altercation with ex-Chelsea striker Demba Ba in the Chinese Super League last weekend.

Zhang was also fined 42,000 yuan (£4,800) after the Chinese Football Association ruled that the midfielder had "interfered with the order of the game and caused chaos that had a negative effect for the public" during Changchun's 1-1 draw with Shanghai Shenhua.

"According...

Shanghai Shenhua condemn alleged racism towards Demba Ba vs. Changchun Yatai

Shanghai Shenhua have alleged that star striker Demba Ba was the subject of racist remarks during a Chinese Super League match on Saturday night.

Late in the 1-1 draw with Changchun Yatai, the former Senegal international collided with Tan Tiancheng and then became visibly angry at apparent comments from Changchun midfielder Zhang Li.

"We had an unpleasant incident in the game," Shanghai coach Wu Jingui told reporters. "Demba Ba was very angry.

"Later, I learned that a Yatai player used insulting...

Shanghai Shenhua apologise after losing to minnows in Chinese FA Cup

Wu Jingui
Shanghai Shenhua head coach Wu Jingui.

Defending Chinese FA Cup champions Shanghai Shenhua were forced to issue a public apology on Wednesday evening after they were knocked out of this year's competition by third tier side Nantong Zhiyun.

Shenhua threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 and exit the competition in the fourth round, when Chinese Super League sides enter the competition, and comes just five months after winning the title for the first time since 1998.

"For the last two games, the team has had problems both in attack and...
