A solitary Steven Fletcher strike helped Sheffield Wednesday overcome Blackburn at Ewood Park in the Sky Bet Championship.

In a tightly-contested encounter, Fletcher scored what proved the winner in the 22nd minute with a classy half volley for his third goal of the season.

It was the type of moment that can make the difference to a promotion push in such a tight division and displays the spending power Wednesday have to fulfil that ambition.

They were made to work hard by a resurgent Blackburn, who...

Jackie Sewell, former England and Aston Villa striker, dies at 89

England's Jackie Sewell, right, fires a shot at goal against Hungary in 1953.

Former England and Aston Villa striker Jackie Sewell has died at the age of 89.

Sewell also scored 40 goals in 145 appearances for Villa between 1955 and 1959, winning the FA Cup in 1957, and also played for Notts County and Hull.

He scored 104 goals in 193 appearances for the Magpies and helped them to promotion from the Football...

Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 with Kieran Lee scoring a stoppage-time winner.

Lee was already the hero after earlier cancelling out Henri Lansbury's first-half opener which looked like rescuing a point for the South Yorkshire side.

But there was even more to celebrate when he secured three points for Wednesday with his close-range effort.

Wednesday started brightly with full-back Jack Hunt made a good attacking run, bursting into the right-hand side of the penalty...

Clayton Donaldson and Lukas Jutkiewicz came to Birmingham's rescue with two late goals to earn a 2-1 Sky Bet Championship home win against a battling Sheffield Wednesday side.

Donaldson converted an 80th-minute penalty to record his fourth successive goal in Blues' last four league games and substitute Jutkiewicz snatched the winner three minutes from time.

They were opportune goals as the Owls had taken a 76th-minute lead through substitute Gary Hooper and had appeared to be on course for their first...

Sheffield Wednesday came from 2-0 down at home to Bristol City to win 3-2 with Kieran Lee scoring a stoppage-time winner.

In a game which saw both teams play with 10 men for the final half an hour, prolific teenage striker Tammy Abraham scored twice to give the visitors a two-goal lead at the interval but goals from Steven Fletcher, Barry Bannan and Lee handed Wednesday victory.

The hosts had Sam Hutchinson sent-off and City's Gary O'Neil was also dismissed, while Lee Tomlin missed a penalty for the...
