Jonathan Gonzalez played the full 90 minutes in the Copa MX final.

United States youth international midfielder Jonathan Gonzalez helped Monterrey to win the Copa MX on Thursday, with Rayados defeating Pachuca 1-0 in Estadio BBVA Bancomer.

The victory capped a fine season for 18-year-old Gonzalez, who is on the radar of both the U.S. and Mexico national teams.

"Honestly, I never imagined that I'd be where I am, but things can change in an instant and you have to take advantage," Gonzalez said after the game in quotes reported by Medio Tiempo.

Monterrey put title ghosts to rest with Copa MX final win over Pachuca

Monterrey
Monterrey have struggled to get over the line in the league, but won the cup.

When looking back at what happened in the 2017 Clausura and 2017 Apertura, Monterrey's prolificness will be remembered. The club picked up a total of 64 points in the two regular seasons combined. In 34 regular season matches, Antonio "Turco" Mohamed's men won 18, and only lost six, but fell short of winning the league.

Heading into Thursday's night Copa MX final against Pachuca, who finished third in the FIFA Club World Cup, Monterrey was in desperate need of ending the year with some silverware.

However, what appeared as an optimistic start to the 2017-18 season soon turned into a challenging one for Los Tuzos, where the results in the first half of the current year didn't reflect the results that were anticipated early on in the summer....

Copa MX final must-see TV: Pachuca, Monterrey have much to prove

Monterrey failed against Tigres in the Liga MX final so now, the Copa MX is their last chance for glory.
Monterrey failed against Tigres in the Liga MX final so now, the Copa MX is their last chance for glory.

How would the common Mexican soccer fan describe the upcoming Copa MX final between Monterrey and Pachuca?

Take it away, Rafa Ramos:

My dear colleague is usually right on the money with these types of takes. The Copa MX final has usually been an afterthought, the forgotten Mexican tournament. In the past, interest has been reserved for fan bases looking to quench long title droughts (Cruz Azul, Chivas), those who wouldn't typically get a mass audience remotely interested in their games, (Puebla,...

Mexican football suspends normal activities, rallies after earthquake

Mexican football has halted in order for the country to recover from an earthquake.

Mexican clubs have rallied to aid the relief effort after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake caused devastation in Mexico City and surrounding states on Tuesday.

More than 200 people died as buildings collapsed, with all midweek Copa MX matches postponed as the country recovers.
