Ex-Ajax and Feyenoord goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer joins LAFC

LAFC has signed Dutch veteran goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer, the MLS club announced on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old Vermeer has spent his entire club career with in the Dutch Eredivisie, aside from a short loan in 2018 to Belgian side Club Brugge.

The former Netherlands international had been at Feyenoord from 2014, having previously played at Ajax for nine seasons.

Vermeer has won numerous accolades, including five Dutch league titles and the Belgian championship while at Brugge.

Ajax midfielder and United States men's national player Sergino Dest said he was surprised by the reaction caused by his decision to leave the Dutch club's winter training camp in Qatar last week amid regional political tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

Dest was in Doha with Ajax but requested to return early to the Netherlands on Jan. 9, five days after the U.S. squad had cancelled their own training camp in the Qatari capital.

Sergino Dest emphasizes it was his decision alone to play with the USMNT over the Netherlands.

Sergino Dest has flown home from Ajax's midseason training camp in Qatar, as he said he does not feel comfortable in the region amid political tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

Dest declared for the USMNT in October after turning down approaches from the Netherlands. He was part of Ajax's warm-weather camp in Doha.

After the death of General Qasem Soleimani in a U.S. military air strike and Iran's retaliation on a U.S. military base in Iraq, Dest requested to fly back to the Netherlands.
