FC Twente chairman resigns over controversial agreement

The chairman of Dutch side FC Twente has resigned after details of a controversial agreement with club investors Doyen Sports were leaked.

Millionaire Aldo van der Laan said the details revealed in the leak were damaging to the Eredivisie club.

"The interests of the club have always been paramount and these are now under threat,'' Van der Laan said in a statement. "The continuing doubts are damaging FC Twente.''

Van der Laan took over at the club earlier in the year but has now left after it was revealed the deal he and predecessor Joop Munsterman struck with Doyen Sports gave it a cut of player transfer fees in return for an investment of €5 million.

However, details of the agreement have shown Doyen has a say over club transfer policy which is banned by the KNVB, Holland's football association.

Van der Laan resigned after the KNVB ordered its licensing committee to investigate.

Twente lie 15th in the Eredivisie table, two points above the relegation play-off spot.
