Dragons slay Reds in cup

Wrexham exacted revenge for last year's FA Cup exit with a 3-1 win over Alfreton Town at the Racecourse Ground thanks largely to a double from Andy Bishop.

The striker deservedly netted his first goals in nine games to book his side a second round place, with Jay Harris providing the third.

Jake Speight's converted second-half penalty threatened to spoil the mood, but it was not enough to override a stellar Wrexham performance in which the scoreline flattered the visitors.

The Dragons' midfield and attack combined well to forge a number of first-half chances - Rob Ogleby's 25-yard drive flashed just past the post, while Bishop headed Neil Ashton's deep cross down to the same player but his shot missed the target.

However, Wrexham's superior work-rate culminated in a 24th-minute goal as Ashton sent in a cross which was headed towards the net by Bishop, with Ross Atkins getting a hand to the ball but unable stop it.

The home side came out in the same mood for the second half and just four minutes in Brett Ormerod collected the ball in the Alfreton box and squared to Bishop, who stroked it in from six yards.

Alfreton galvanised and in the 60th minute a scrum in the Wrexham box led to a penalty which was put confidently away by Speight.

However, Wrexham reasserted their superiority and a 73rd-minute Ormerod effort was parried by Atkins to Harris, who calmly slotted home to cap the victory.
