America's young champions Edson Alvarez, Diego Lainez ready for Europe

Edson Alvarez celebrates after scoring in Club America's Liga MX Apertura final second-leg win over Cruz Azul.
Edson Alvarez has a place in the hearts of all Club America fans after his heroics vs. Cruz Azul.

MEXICO CITY -- It was the 74th minute of Mexico's third group-stage game of the World Cup against Sweden last summer when Edson Alvarez swung his left leg, missed the ball and then felt it ricochet off his right thigh and past goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

It must have felt like it was happening in slow motion as the ball rolled over the line to make the score 3-0 to Sweden. The goal left Mexico on the brink of exiting the competition, at least until South Korea managed to defeat Germany. After...

Miguel Herrera's wild celebrations are the real Liga MX final MVPs

Club America has won a record 13th Liga MX championship -- but team boss Miguel Herrera's signature intense celebrations are the true MVPs.

Herrera became a meme-in-the-making back in 2014 when he was in charge of Mexico at the World Cup in Brazil -- and his wild facial expressions and super-charged fist pumps haven't let up since.

Sunday's win over Cruz Azul saw him jump for joy in championship form.

While Cruz Azul fans (or those of only 12-time league winner Chivas) may not like seeing...

America's Edson Alvarez, Diego Lainez among Liga MX final's top performers

Club America has won the 2018 Apertura title. Following another Liga MX trophy for Las Aguilas, let's take a look back at the best individual performances from last week's battle for the championship between Cruz Azul and Club America.

Here's the Liga MX best XI from both legs of the final.

GK: Agustin Marchesin (Club America)

Were it not for his costly mistake on Sunday night's second leg, Cruz Azul's Jesus Corona would be the one winning this award. Nonetheless, in his place with two shutouts...

Club America achieve historic 13th title as Cruz Azul curse continues

MEXICO CITY -- Edson Alvarez netted two second half goals as Club America defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 on Sunday to win the Liga MX 2018 Apertura inside Estadio Azteca.

The teams had tied 0-0 in Thursday's first leg.

Here are three quick thoughts:

1. Alvarez etches name in history as America claim title No. 13

This was Edson Alvarez's night in Estadio Azteca. When other more experienced heads around him couldn't get a grip and stick the ball into the back of the net, it was the 21-year-old who struck...

Club America wins its 13th title in Liga MX history following two goals from Edson Alvarez.

Edson Alvarez scored twice as Club America beat Cruz Azul 2-0 on Sunday to win the 2018 Liga MX Apertura title.

The win at Estadio Azteca gives the Mexico City club a record 13th title, moving past Guadalajara for most all-time in Mexico's top flight division.

The first half continued the physical battle that characterized last week's scoreless first leg, also held at Azteca. America had three shots on goal while Cruz Azul went into the break without any.

Edson Alvarez's first goal came...
