Giggs: United shoudn't retire No. 11

Ryan Giggs does not feel Manchester United should retire the No. 11 shirt in honour of his playing career at the club.

Giggs hung up his boots at the end of last season, having won 34 trophies across a 23-year spell at Old Trafford, as he opted to take up a role as Louis van Gaal's assistant.

There have been a number of instances of clubs honouring legendary players by retiring their shirt numbers -- AC Milan do not have a No. 3 or No. 6 in recognition of Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi, Ajax retired Johan Cruyff's No. 14 and West Ham no longer use the No. 6 worn by Bobby Moore.

However, Giggs told MUTV that he does not think United should follow suit.

"There are obviously special cases but it just depends on the club really," he said. "I don't think it's [right] for United where they constantly churn over great players."

He said he was unsure who would be the next to take up his number at United and joked: "They're under pressure, aren't they?"
