Fabio Coentrao said the reason he agreed to cancel his contract at Real Madrid with a year left was because he wanted to be happy.

Coentrao signed for Madrid in 2011 after leaving Benfica, and after being sent on loan to Sporting Lisbon last season, he had hoped to be able to return on a permanent deal.

Instead, the left-back rejoined boyhood club Rio Ave on Friday ahead of the transfer deadline.

"I waited until the 31st for a call from [Sporting], to which I gave everything I had last year, and...

Fabio Coentrao: I forgot how to play football at Real Madrid

Fabio Coentrao has made 24 starts in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon following a loan from Real Madrid.

Fabio Coentrao would like to remain at Sporting Lisbon beyond his current loan deal as he said he has regained his confidence following a difficult season at Real Madrid.

Under contract with Madrid until June 2019, Coentrao joined Sporting in the summer in the hope of relaunching his career.

"The truth is that I would like to stay at this club until the end of my career," Coentrao told Marca. "Things are going well. I'm very happy here but I have a contract with Real Madrid and I will respect their...

Real Madrid's sensible side shines through in loan return of Jesus Vallejo

Summer is the season with the least competitive football available, so the average fan has to make do with related, but indeed less exciting, pieces of entertainment. Signings are obviously one of them, and while some supporters salivate expecting the arrival of a big name, even if the player in question isn't really what the squad needs, others are happy simply with a loanee coming back to his club after a good formative period.

Examples of those extremes can be easily be found in Real Madrid's...

In recent seasons the now 29-year-old has rarely featured for Los Blancos, and had an up-and-down loan spell at Monaco in 2015-16, but now has a chance to get his career back on track in his home country.
