Atlanta's Shea out for season with 'destroyed' knee

Atlanta United full-back Brek Shea is out for the season after suffering a serious right knee injury that will require surgery, coach Frank de Boer told reporters on Tuesday.

Shea was hurt early in Sunday's 2-1 loss at the Seattle Sounders. He tore the ACL and meniscus along with other damage in his knee, De Boer said.

Reigning MLS champions Atlanta United has signed U.S. national team midfielder Brek Shea to a one-year free agent contract.

The 6-foot-3 defender spent the last two seasons with the Vancouver Whitecaps, but did not have his contract option picked up for the 2019 season. The left-footed Shea is a former U.S. teammate of Carlos Bocanegra, Atlanta United's technical director.

Brek Shea sidelined 6-12 weeks for Vancouver Whitecaps

Vancouver Whitecaps attacker Brek Shea will miss the next 6-12 weeks after injuring his knee, coach Carl Robinson says.

Shea scored in the third minute of the Whitecaps' CONCACAF Champions League defeat to Tigres, but left the game after picking up the injury seven minutes later.

Robinson said Shea, who joined the team from Orlando City in February, would have more tests on Friday but that the injury "doesn't look good."

Vancouver Whitecaps want to bring out the best of Brek Shea - Carl Robinson

Brek Shea can play an important role for the the Vancouver Whitecaps this season despite falling out of favor at Orlando, coach Carl Robinson says.

Former Orlando coach Adrian Heath experimented with Shea at left-back, and though Jason Kreis restored him as an attacking winger after replacing Heath in July, the 26-year-old made only five starts under the new manager.

But Robinson told that he and his staff see plenty of potential in Shea and have no doubts over his best position.

Orlando City traded U.S. international midfielder Brek Shea to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night in exchange for forward Giles Barnes.
