Boro crumble under Liverpool pressure in Premier League swan song

A spirited Middlesbrough side eventually crumbled in the face of relentless waves of unerring pressure from Liverpool, who ran out 3-0 winners and confirmed the return of Champions League football to Anfield next season. Boro racked up their 20th defeat of a deflating and depressing season and will be grateful they can now close this chapter of their history and look to move on to mounting another promotion push from the Championship.

Negredo, Middlesbrough draw another blank against Liverpool

Middlesbrough were simply outclassed by a rampant and fluent Liverpool in what was a disappointing display from the home side. Energy drained from the Teessiders after negative substitutions in the second half as Liverpool coasted to an easy victory. While this is definitely one of the fixtures where a positive result would seem a bit of a reach, it was disenchanting that Boro didn't even have a go at their opponents.

Middlesbrough's Alvaro Negredo looks dejected after missing a chance to score
Alvaro Negredo hasn't scored since opening night but will be extra keen to score against former club Manchester City.

Middlesbrough marksman Alvaro Negredo makes his return to Manchester City this weekend in a bid to redeem his reputation after a hit-and-miss time at the Etihad.

Negredo will be remembered by City fans for a short blaze of glory amidst a frustrating and largely unproductive spell in Manchester. Since returning to England, on loan to Boro from Valencia, the Spaniard has been manager Aitor Karanka's number one choice to lead the line. After beginning the season with a bang by scoring the Teessiders'...

Middlesbrough look to snap goal drought at home vs. Bournemouth

Adama Traore excelled at Arsenal and has given defensive minded Middlesbrough a bit of life the last few times out.

Middlesbrough must look to play with positivity and verve to build on last weekend's hard-working performance that won them a valuable point in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal.

Winger Adama Traore was one of the standout men from last weekend, clocking up pacey runs at almost 35km/h. Fans had seen glimpses of the former Barcelona man's speedy skills when he livened up the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham earlier in the season. Ever since, boss Aitor Karanka has been called upon to give Traore a place in his...

Aitor Karanka needs to make Middlesbrough take more risks

Aitor Karanka's defensive style helped earn Middlesbrough promotion but they must evolve to stay in the top flight.

Aitor Karanka must pick up a bruised and battered Middlesbrough side, sore from a pitiful 1-0 defeat against Watford.

An away trip to Arsenal is definitely not what you'd choose next but the fact of the matter is that Boro will be -- and should be -- scrapping and battling for every last point in the Premier League. No matter who the opponent, what counts is that the team spirit is there and that there is at least some energy and purpose to the performance.
