Revolution use late penalty kick to tie up Sounders

Carles Gil converted an 87th-minute penalty kick to help the New England Revolution extend their unbeaten road stretch to six games with a 3-3 draw with the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.

In a wild affair, the Revolution (9-9-7) twice came back from one-goal deficits to move to 3-0-3 over their past six away from home - one match after their 11-game overall unbeaten streak ended. Gil calmly converted from the spot after the Sounders were whistled for a late ball to the hand inside the box. It was his ninth goal on the seaason.

It was disappointing result for the Sounders (11-7-6), who got two goals from Harry Shipp. Seattle has one win over its past four matches.

The Sounders didn't waste time getting on the scoresheet. Taking advantage of a New England turnover, Jordan Morris delivered a well-placed cross through minor traffic that was easily poked in by Shipp two minutes into the match.

The Revolution leveled the score in the 27th minute, thanks to the aid of VAR. Initially, Michael Mancienne's first MLS goal on a corner kick was waved off due to a whistled foul. After another look, the goal was awarded.

Eight minutes later, New England had a 2-1 lead on Gustavo Bou's third goal in five league matches. Bou's header came off a brilliant cross from Edgar Castillo to stun the Sounders' supporters.

New England nearly went up by two twice in first-half stoppage time.

First, Seattle keeper Stefan Frei made a sensational one-handed save on a Bou strike. Shortly after, the Revs appeared to have scored off an initially awarded own goal. However, VAR again came into play, apparently showing Frei had possession during the scrum.

Seattle came out aggressive in the second half. Nicolas Lodeiro delivered a laser strike that New England keeper Matt Turner stopped. Lodeiro soon followed with a prime left-footer that Turner also smothered.

The Sounders finally were rewarded with two goals in two minutes. First in the 65th, Shipp came through with a precise header. A minute later, Morris got behind the Revolution's back end and dropped the ball back to Lodeiro, whose strike deflected off a diving Turner's hand and across the goal line.

It looked as if Seattle were headed to a win until Jordy Delem was cited for the hand ball.
