Banyana skipper Van Wyk signs with Denmark pro club

South Africa women's national team captain Janine van Wyk has signed a one-year deal with Danish pro club Fortuna Hjorring, she announced on Saturday.

Van Wyk, who is South Africa's most capped international footballer, male or female, played at this year's Women's World Cup in France, but has been without a pro deal since leaving the Houston Dash at the end of the last NWSL season.

She spent two terms with the Dash before parting ways, and returned home to play with her own club, JvW FC, which she founded in 2013 in order to provide girls and women with playing opportunities in South Africa.

The defender, a two-time Olympian, wrote on her Instagram account: "I am incredibly excited to announce that I will be joining @fortunahjorring in Denmark for a year.

"Its a club that has a great development structure and believes in the growth of women's football. I cant wait to get started & contribute to being the best I can be for this amazing team."

Fortuna, which competes in the UEFA Women's Champions League, has had a number of international players on the books in the past, most notably Australia's Emily van Egmond and Elise Kellond-Knight, as well as Brazil's Tamires and American goalkeepers Aubrey Bledsoe and Michelle Betos.

The 32-year-old will be the Danish side's first South African signing, just as she was the first for the Dash, and indeed the NWSL.
