Baroka produce smash-and-grab to stun Cape Town City

Baroka FC produced a classic 'smash-and-grab' to secure a 2-0 victory over Cape Town City in their Absa Premiership clash in Polokwane on Tuesday.

City dominated possession, territory and chances, but somehow contrived to lose the match to arguably the only two genuine opportunities their hosts created in the game.

A brace of goals from Botswana midfielder Mpho Kgaswane sealed the points for Baroka, who move above City and into sixth in the table.

For coach Benni McCarthy, it is City's a fourth league defeat in a row, the first time in the club's short history they have had such a barren run in the Premiership.

Perhaps they knew it would not be their day as early as the second minute when striker Judas Moseamedi struck the upright, and shortly afterwards Lyle Lakay was inches wide from a good position.

However, Baroka took the lead with their only opportunity of the first half, a free-kick that was lashed home from 35-yards by Kgaswane.

It was more of the same in the second period; City had all the ball and created a number if clear-cut chances, but a mixture of poor finishing and some desperate last-ditch defending from Baroka meant they remained scoreless.

The best opportunity fell to youngster Shaun Roberts, who raced onto a cross from Sibusiso Masina but blasted the ball wide with just the goalkeeper to beat.

As City pressed forward late on, they were caught on the counter by Baroka, with the ball fed to Kgaswane on the edge of the box and his left-footed drive had the beating of visiting keeper Shu-Aib Walters.

City are next in action on Friday night at home against Chippa United, while Baroka visit Bidvest Wits on the same evening.
