Cristiano Ronaldo best player in world, says Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane

ESPN FC's Brian McBride and Mark Donaldson assess this week's performance of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi in La Liga.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world, according to his Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman -- a three-time winner of FIFA's World Player of the Year prize himself -- put the Portuguese ahead of Barcelona star Lionel Messi as the greatest player on the planet in an interview with Mexican newspaper Record.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is the best," Zidane said. "People can say what they like about Cristiano Ronaldo, but in his heart he's a good person.

Marseille's Lucas Silva: I was never kicked off the bus

Hailed upon his arrival to Real Madrid, Lucas Silva never found his footing at the Bernabeu and is now on the outs at Marseille.
Lucas Silva has made 17 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

On-loan Real Madrid midfielder Lucas Silva has dismissed allegations that he was kicked off the Marseille team bus in the wake of turning down the chance to leave the club.

Silva, 22, joined Marseille in a season-long loan deal in August but he has made only nine starts in the league since then.

Belgian side Anderlecht wanted to end the central midfielder's stay in France but the Brazilian apparently rejected the move.

He has since been removed from the club's squad to play Athletic Bilbao in the...

Barcelona set club record unbeaten run as Ivan Rakitic excels vs. Valencia

Ivan Rakitic was superb in a heavily rotated XI as Barcelona fought back to draw 1-1 at Valencia.

Barcelona qualified for their sixth Copa del Rey final in eight years after drawing with Valencia 1-1 at the Mestalla, making an 8-1 aggregate win. Wilfrid Kaptoum scored the only goal for the Blaugrana, who enjoyed 64 percent of possession, created 13 goalscoring chances and attempted 11 shots, three of them on target.

Given the overwhelming 7-0 advantage that the Catalans earned in the first leg at the Camp Nou, it was hardly surprising to see Luis Enrique using the game as a golden chance...

Real Madrid's poor player decisions raise Castilla questions

Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema have become two of Europe's most prolific strikers this season.

Real Madrid's signing of Lucas Silva in January 2015 was heralded as something of a coup. The defensive midfielder had recently been named the best in his position in the Brazilian top flight as Cruzeiro claimed the 2014 Brasileiro title and the 21-year-old apparently had the world at his feet.

Silva was drafted into the side quickly enough, playing 16 minutes against Deportivo before being handed a full 90 in the Champions League last-16 first leg against Schalke, a 2-0 away victory. The return...
