Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi on target as Barcelona pads La Liga lead

Steve Nicol praises Luis Suarez for facing his poor run of form head-on and getting rewarded for it in Barcelona's win over Villarreal.
Lionel Messi tied Gerd Muller for most goals for one club in the top five European leagues with his 525th in Barca's 2-0 win over 10-man Villarreal.

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi broke down a stubborn Villarreal to send Barcelona five points clear at the top of La Liga despite an under-par display in a 2-0 victory at Estadio de la Ceramica. Only after the hosts had midfielder Daniel Raba sent off for an ugly tackle on Sergio Busquets on the hour mark did the Catalans start creating the chances they needed to win the game.

Messi milestone as Barca maintain lead; Atletico jump Real Madrid

Lionel Messi tied Gerd Muller for most goals for one club in the top five European leagues with his 525th in Barca's 2-0 win over 10-man Villarreal.

Lionel Messi equalled Gerd Muller's record 525 goals with a single club in Europe's top five leagues as Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga to five points after a 2-0 victory over 10-man Villarreal at Estadio de la Ceramica.

The visitors dominated possession and had the better of the chances but had to wait until the 72nd minute to break the deadlock and it came from Uruguay international Luis Suarez who fired Paco Alcacer's assist home from close range.

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner...

Ronaldo 'unfortunate' to be playing in Messi's era - Barca's Rakitic

Lionel Messi tied Gerd Muller for most goals for one club in the top five European leagues with his 525th in Barca's 2-0 win over 10-man Villarreal.

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic politely disagreed with Cristiano Ronaldo's assumption that he's the best player in the history of football, nominating Lionel Messi for the position instead.

Real Madrid forward Ronaldo won his fifth Ballon d'Or this week -- drawing level with Messi in the process -- and later told France Football that he believes he's the greatest to ever play the game.

However, Rakitic does not share the assessment made by the Portugal international, who he says is "unfortunate"...
